Highways in Canada

Yes there have been many good upgrades to Vancouver's highway system but it's still the worst in the country.

The Port Mann, Golden Ears, and soon new Pattula and George Massey will all be tolled roads allowing just one bridge over the Fraser toll free. The SFPR will NEVER be brought up to full freeway standard, hell it's been 20 years until they finally have agreed on one interchange on Delta to bring 91 up to freeway standard.

Yes there has been a lot of improvement but it started so far behind that it still isn't even close to catching up. Also the SFPR is only partly freeway and most is just an ordinary 4 lane road, nothing more. Vancouver has done a great job in transit infrastructure over the last 30 years but it's highway system is a disaster, just less so than it use to be.

While I don't like the idea of freeways ripping up neighbourhoods in urban areas, Vancouver still made a huge mistake by not connecting downtown to HWY#1 with a freeway and not making Boundary a freeway from HWY #! to a bridge over the Fraser to Richmond. Right now getting from YVR/Richmond to the North Shore is an impossibility.

The city is very liveable but it's no highways mantra has led it to have one of the longest commutes in NA which is remarkable for a metro that isn't even in the top 20 in population.
