The gap is protected by the Greenbelt. And hasn't change in a very long time. It seems odd now that a highway will go down it, but we are pretty restrictive with growth areas.
Ajax was actually named after the light cruiser HMS Ajax, a well renowned ship. Probably better than it deserves, though they have a nice monument on the lake.

In any event nice pictures of the 407 expansion! One of the few that makes sense IMO.
