I'm sure that mainland China is under evaluated since there's been so much construction in the past 10-20 years.
Most likely, the big gap between the high-rises count from the site I gave and your estimates are more related to what constitute a high-rise; the site I gave counts building over 90m tall. Here in Montreal, we have 30 storeys buildings that are under 90 m. In the document you posted (Magnitude and Extent of Six Years of Land Subsidence in Shanghai Revealed by JERS-1 SAR Data) they mentioned that out of those 7000 high-rises, only 5% are above 30 stories which would mean there were about 350 in 2005. Doesn't seem too far off reality when considering they now are counting 822 for 2012...
