HECFI Still Needs Millions (Emma Reilly, Hamilton Spectator, Oct 31, 2011)
Hamilton Entertainment and Convention Facilities Inc. will be asking city council for a $3.467-million grant to help cover its 2012 budget, John Hertel, its chief administrative officer and interim CEO, said Monday....
The $3.4 million requested is only a small fraction of the taxpayer-funded subsidies the agency needs. HECFI staff estimate that including utilities, capital costs and other expenses, it will require $8.867 million in 2012.
That’s slightly more than 2011, which HECFI staff estimate will require $7.255 million in city subsidies, including a $3.567-million grant.
However, there are some bright lights on the horizon, said Hertel, including the recent Selena Gomez concert and an upcoming (Nov. 26) appearance by the indie-rock band, The Sheepdogs. Prince is also coming to town to rehearse in HECFI facilities for four days, ahead of his concerts at the Air Canada Centre on Friday and Saturday.
