Spring in the District of Columbia Part 2: Transportationy stuff incld H St streetcar

More pictures taken this spring using my pocket camera while out on normal day-to-day business. This set will focus on transportation stuff. Also, despite the thread title it is a mix of DC and the surrounding region, just like Part 1, in which I also lied in the title.

First of all, the very exciting construction of the H Street streetcar. Tracks and stations are already in. We are waiting for the railyards and power systems to be installed before it can open, as well as for more trams to be delivered (we have 3 but need 6 more). Opening date is 2013.

Between Union Station and the Starburst intersection the tracks are in the outside lane with stations on the sidewalk. These are mostly complete.

At the Starburst intersection the tracks and stations move to the median, where they run until the Anacostia River.

This will be a station (note the raised platform and rumble strips), but the shelter and seating haven't been installed yet.

Looking the other way.

Here's one of the 3 streetcar LRVs that have been delivered already. This picture is from last summer.

OK. Let's move on.

Old streetcar tracks in Georgetown. Note the third rail, which was how streetcars in the historic parts of DC were powered (there's a law against overhead wires).

I-395 in suburban Alexandria.

Woodbridge, VA station for VRE, Amtrak and Greyhound.

RAWR!

Ketchup and mustard.

Check out this sexy wood panel interior!

Metrobus roadeo. Roadeo. Get it? HILARIOUS.

Blue means express.

But all the long buses are red, which makes them more fun.

The ultimate answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is in fact: How do you get to Mount Pleasant via Adams Morgan?

Clever.

Old trolley station in the Brightwood neighborhood, still used for buses.

Bus station in the Shirlington neighborhood of Arlington, VA.

Typical DC bus stop, 16th Street.

Typical Fairfax, VA bus stop, Fairfax Boulevard. Haha. At least there's shade, I guess.

NATO has license plates now?

Suck it, ugly sidewalks.

Wouldn't want to have a thread without a picture of the Metro.

That's all.
