Definitely buy used. Even if it's just a year or two old it'll be so much cheaper.
I've been thinking about what I want to buy in a few years. I won't need a car in St. John's, but I'll probably buy a new one when I finish school. I kinda like the Fiat 500, I think it would be a great city car.
Others I would consider (at least among affordable cars):
Scion tC
Pontiac G8 (they're expensive now, but will probably be very cheap soon)
Kia Forte Koup
Hyundai Genesis Coupe (brand new, so expensive now, but maybe by 2014...)
Saab 9-3 (can usually be found for a reasonable price)
Acura TL (before they ruined the entire lineup)
I absolutely love(d) my LS, and would definitely drive another. The only thing stopping me would be maintenance; it's tough to work on, and everything is expensive since it's a luxury brand.
And if I could spend the money to import a car, I would love one of these:
