Good to see Boston on here!
The Custom House was the first "sky scraper" in Boston.
Boston's High Spine (Mid-town looking area) exists only because there weren't any buildings of historic significance here. Most of the modern high rises were built atop giant rail yards that crossed here from Albany and NY in a marsh. This is also why the city could place the Mass Pike there, it followed the path of the original RR. Not too long ago (mid 20th Century) the Prudential Ctr complex was built atop massive rail yards that separated the historic Back Bay from the historic South End. Great project that united the neighborhoods together and was a huge part of the continued success of the city and opened up large tracts of land for further development.
