Imperial Cotton Mill

Imperial Cotton Centre up for sale

TheSpec.com -Paul Morse - March 01, 2010

A sprawling historic Hamilton industrial complex once touted as a catalyst for local artistic revival is up for sale.

The 157,000-square foot former Imperial Cotton Mill on Sherman Avenue North and former home of the Imperial Cotton Centre for the Arts is on the block for just shy of $3.5 million.

“In reality, all our properties are for sale at one time or another,” said Peter Crosthwaite, spokesman for majority owner Toronto Stores Ltd., Monday.

“We are looking across Canada for people who will carry on what we have been doing.”

Crosthwaite said the building has been quietly up for sale since the summer.

Toronto Stores and several individual investors bought the 1900-era textile mill in 1999 and converted it into artist and artisan studios and enterprise space. They invested about $2 million to upgrade the property.

The owners didn’t want one of the last remaining examples of Canada’s textile industry to fall to the wrecker’s ball and decided to make it an arts incubator, he said.
Anyone got some loose change?
