Gangs thrive on turf they can control. And that happens when you have extreme concentrated poverty in certain neighborhoods. To the extent that gentrification brings the middle class back to these neighborhoods and allows them to diversify more in terms of the economics - that eliminates the places that those gangs can successfully operate.
