Native protest on RedHill

Native protesters to close Red Hill

Six Nations activists plan 7 a.m. shutdown

John Burman
Commuter traffic on three major Hamilton routes faces major delays this morning as native demonstrators march on the Red Hill Valley Parkway, the Linc and Highway 403.

Six Nations women and their supporters say they plan to march along the three routes this morning to protest Ottawa’s decision to arm border guards.

Demonstrators are gathering in Hamilton at Queenston Road and Red Hill at 7 a.m. and then marching south on the parkway, up the escarpment and west on the Lincoln Alexander Parkway to Highway 403.

The march will then work its way west along the westbound Highway 403 to Victoria Park in Brantford.

Janie Jamieson, spokesperson for the group, said the march will be peaceful. She did not say how many marchers are involved.

Hamilton police say both the Red Hill and Linc are controlled access highways. No pedestrians allowed.

Jamieson said the march is to protest the Canada Border Services Agency decision to arm border guards at the Cornwall border station.

The demonstration in Hamilton is a “unity march against armed CBSA” and participants intend “to promote a message of peace an unity,” Jamieson said in a statement.

Jamieson said the Six Nations women believe human rights are being violated and international law being broken by Customs decision to close its station at cornwall and a bridge connecting the Akwesasne territory.
