Trouble hounds Brooklyn site where construction worker fell

By Tina Moore
May 23rd 2009

Quote:
Long before a construction worker survived a 35-foot fall off a Brooklyn building, the site had racked up dozens of violations, records show.

Since January 2008, the Buildings Department has issued stop-work orders 12 times at 111 Lawrence St., hitting contractors with 38 claims for unsafe conditions, falling objects and fire hazards.

Eleven violations remain open and contractors on the job face $78,200 in fines, records show.

...On Nov. 15, the city temporarily stopped work after finding a hydraulic climbing unit stored illegally at the top of the crane was causing "excessive tower movement."

On Nov. 17, Pinnacle and Bovis were cited after an operator let a 13,000-pound counterweight hang over an occupied building.

Pinnacle violated the building code again on Nov. 26 with the "unsafe hoisting and rigging" of a crane, the department charged.
