0 Comments Surrey will be getting 50 tickets for the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Games and giving them to local residents.
As part of the "Official Venue" contract, Surrey has access to 50 tickets, and Coun. Linda Hepner told The Leader Friday the city will be taking organizers up on the opportunity.
Total cost, Hepner estimates, is $50,000.
Over the next while, city staff will be deciding which of this city's citizens will be receiving the tickets.
She suggested it would be leaders in sport, business, children at risk, volunteers and probably school children, perhaps winners of a yet-to-be-decided contest.
"Staff are developing what that criteria would look like," Hepner said, adding the tickets "are not going to politicians."
Hepner said she was taken aback by the deadline to secure the tickets, which is March 31, so staff haven't fully developed a protocol for ticket distribution.
They will be paid for by the city, and given free to those who are deemed qualified.
The contract sets aside a certain number of tickets for sporting events as well, but Hepner said it's the wrong economic climate to be buying those as well.
"The economics are too tough," she said.
