According to this Colliers report, the downtown office projects we're currently aware of (275 Second, Lake Placid, Discovery, Rumley, Capitol 4, KG) will add a combined 399,000 sq. ft. of space to the downtown inventory. That's a 21% increase to the current total square footage of 1.93 million sq. ft. That's pretty impressive if you ask me!

My former preference would have been, given the choice, ONE 400,000 sq. ft. tower equating to 30+ floors rather than a handful of smaller scale projects (back when I was younger and dying for taller buildings in S'toon). However, I now favor the mix of smaller projects spread throughout the CBD that we're now seeing. These small projects will help add to the vibrancy in every corner of downtown, as well as (hopefully) contribute to a more pleasant human-scale urban environment.

And 275 Second Avenue, at a projected 12+ floors is an exciting "little biggie" that will help boost our skyline as well.

I share your feelings macca. While it would have been nice to see construction on some of downtown's larger surface lots first, I welcome this proposed development nonetheless.

I just wonder what this announcement will do to any plans underway for the parking lot on the south side of the Galaxy (assuming something is being planned for that site). If the owner of that property was planning office space I can bet this would put an end to that plan, at least in the short term. I don't want that lot sitting empty for a decade or more. Maybe they're trying to court reluctant Cameco? That would be a welcome upset for downtown.
