Yeah, I made a hand cranked gear case from Technics parts when I was 13 or so that turned the output shaft right around 5000 rpm... But I had glued it shut, otherwise it wanted to explode apart.
I didn't have a meter like that... I simply counted how many output revolutions I got from one input revolution, and then counted my revolutions over a one minute time frame, and did the math... I ruined several gears by way of the inner shaft hub separating from the toothed outer hub trying to work it up... I obviously don't remember anymore specifically, but I think my input/output gear ratio was like 1:40 or so...
I also was really into devising ways to craft wheeled vehicles out of Lego that would withstand a 'demolition derby' type game, while also delivering maximum damage to the opposing vehicle. The object of the game was that there was a Lego man in a cockpit, and so long as the vehicle had 2 wheels and he was intact, the game continued... I spent hours and hours doing that... It was fun enough that my stepdad got into it with me the one weekend, until my vehicles kept slaughtering his.
Hmmm... I think I might even have the last 'good' one I made... I'll look tomorrow.
