I see what you are saying, but regardless of provenance, the existing PL adds so much street level appeal to DT. I would be less upset if the structures replacing PL were particularly good, but they aren't. They are disastrous.
I hate the fact that they are appropriating the name "Penny Lane" for that abomination that is to be erected.
