City of Pittsburgh posts big surplus
Saturday, February 17, 2007
The city of Pittsburgh finished 2006 with a surplus of $38.8 million, according to an initial, unaudited financial report released yesterday. It marks the second large surplus in a row after years of financial difficulty.
The city raised $440 million -- 6 percent more than expected. It spent $401.2 million, 6 percent less than budgeted.
The city collected millions of dollars more than expected in taxes on income and deed transfers and the $52 levy on people who work in the city, and brought in nearly $9 million more than budgeted in federal and state grants.
Nearly every department spent less than its budget, led by the Police Bureau's $5.7 million surplus. Most came from salary savings related to staffing.
The bureau finished the year with 58 fewer employees than called for in its budget. Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has pledged to boost the number of officers to 900.
The surplus isn't official until the May release of the city's annual audit. The audited 2005 surplus was $25 million.
