PRATTVILLE—The route of a northern bypass through Autauga and Elmore counties probably won’t be decided for another three or four months, officials said during a public hearing Thursday night.
The proposed four-lane divided highway will act as a bypass through the two counties, with Interstate 85 in Montgomery serving as the eastern anchor and U.S. 80 in Lowndes County as the western anchor.
The Alabama Department of Transportation displayed three proposed routes during the public hearing for the project at the Prattville City Hall.
Selecting a route is a balancing act, said Robby Anderson, city engineer for Prattville.
“You want it to be far enough away from built up areas to act as a bypass, but not so far away people wouldn’t use it,” he said. “We will use the comments we receive tonight to come up with the best route.”
A final decision on the route should be selected and presented following additional public meetings in three to four months, Anderson said.
A major consideration in the construction of the bypass is the proposed extension of I-85 west from Montgomery to the Mississippi line. One of three routes being considered would go through southern Autauga County.

Yes, this is the northern half of the loop that would connect to the current outer loop project that will go around the western, southern and eastern parts of Montgomery to complete the circle.
The route shown is currently ALDOT's first choice for the new beltway.
