I am still hopeful but the I don't think the results so far are encouraging. It reminds me of what you'd see at a semi-suburban mall redevelopment in a city with bad transit. It seems to be lacking in vision and quality. Even if it turns out to be just so-so, the buildings in the end could be nice and the public spaces can be improved over time. It's hard to go back and add major public buildings and transit facilities and the like though. It seems so short-sighted to build a bus mall here when there is even already a proposal for an underground loop at Mumford. The pedway should have been put underground too and connected to a new underground transit complex (with an improved connection to the new ferry terminal).
Stepping back more it feels like while Halifax has been growing a lot through added population and private sector construction, it doesn't have much in the way of new public amenities and urban infrastructure that kick things up a notch. Is there anything more impressive than the library that opened a decade ago? What's the 2020's equivalent of that?
