This extreme of weather is unusual enough that's it's not an extended coping issue really. The vast majority of people won't be spending much time outside for a few days, and most people will avoid going out if they don't need to, but in many ways it's not unlike a string of uncooperative weather in any season. I'm probably not going on any long walks this weekend and life shifts indoors as much as possible. Most work that needs to happen outdoors gets postponed for a a few days. Some things are irritating and more difficult than usual, things get put off if they can and you adjust your routine accordingly.
It will be bright and sunny, amplified by our first real snowfall of the season. There is a beauty and stillness to a extreme cold snap as well (from a heated location). I wouldn't say it's fun, but it is one of the strange crazy collective experiences and makes for great small talk.
It would be one thing if we stayed below -30 from November to March, but this weather is notable because it's unusual. Even in Edmonton, the average is 12 days in January get above 0.
But yes, a block heater is absolutely requried if you want reliable car in the winter, that's just the norm here.
