I live for these kinds of encounters (close encounters or the second kind). If we would have encountered each other, it would have been of the third kind

Unfortunately, no. I was there about an hour later. My metadata shows my exact flight time between 11:30am - 11:50am.

That would have been really cool if it was my drone. You'll probably catch me in the sky soon enough though.

What are the rules on flying a drone over Downtown? I am genuinely curious.

Sub-250g drones are given free reign, pretty much. You need to be mindful of the skies, and give way to any other aircraft. This means that you're able to fly above the 120m limit, but you must have the drone in line of sight at all times, and always fly in the same direction as aircraft (ie, if you're flying near the seaplanes). I'd recommend only flying above 120m if you're certain that you're not in a predetermined flight path. Of course, airports remain a no-go.

Above 250g, it becomes very difficult to fly within cities without an advance pilot's license and even then, you must submit your flight plans to NAV Canada for approval, check NOTAMs before your flight, mustn't fly over people or events and you need to be 100ft away from any buildings.*

*Some of these rules can be skirted with prior approval from NAV Canada.

Hey Klazu: we have our differences (definitely) but I won't let them derail what this forum is really about: so, you do taken good pictures: this project begs for you to give it a go. I know everyone would appreciate your skills being applied to this most photogenic of towers. Go for it!

My initial reaction to my first drone (Mavic 2 Pro) wasn't all that great. The problem with consumer drones are that the cameras suck, and the cameras in the Mini series (the ones that you can use freely around Vancouver) are even worse. My old 2006 Nikon D200 produces better results.

This is mostly due to small lenses and even smaller sensors. In order to keep the weight and price down, sacrifices have to be made. As someone who makes their living from photography, the Mini series of drones are more about the video features. I know that the drone's camera will never compete with my D850 and its wide array of lenses, so it's best to focus on video - which looks great, even when using the Mini drones.

There are some photo features in the Mini series like the wide angle and 180 degree shots that I do like, but by and large, if you want to capture high quality images with a drone, you need to spend a ton of money, and be prepared to get your advance pilot's license, and everything that comes along with that.


The wide angle can produce some nice results. (shot with the Mini 2)




And the pano feature of the Mavic series is great in the right location

Their credit game is super weak. It would have been nice if they reached out, and at least asked me how I wanted to be credited/linked. Instead, they used my Youtube name with zero context.

I noticed that they posted it a few days ago, so I messaged them, but they never responded. Such is life when sharing stuff on social media.
