Google Map

Has an interesting timeline of how the port was expanded.

It's not as intrusive as I thought it would be?

Ya, I'd have to look for it but I'm fairly sure I remember a Port webpage saying this expansion will make a huge difference for them but on the map it's pretty non-intrusive as you mention.

Look out Seabus, a couple more west-ward port expansions and you'll be locked in!

Predictions off. Tesla Semi launched yesterday, Dec 1 2022. First deliveries to Pepsi-Co.

I'm not folding yet, delivering 2 trucks is a lot different from general availability.

Place your bets people!

Tesla's recent car launches show that they work through about a year of backorders before new orders have a hope of getting delivered. I don't know how many pre-orders the Semi has, but it's in the thousands.

According to the event yesterday, they are producing 5/week in Nevada now, with plans to ramp to 50,000/yr in Texas in 2024.

Great moving goalposts.

In production, delivered, in service - nice.

When has Tesla ever not had plans to ramp up production?

No goalposts moved, consider me wrong when there are Tesla Semis on the street here by this time next year. Until then keep dreaming.

Yeah they have no experience in producing vehicles at mass quantities.

Tesla is one of the worst over-promise, under-deliver companies on the planet. Maybe they've gotten better over the years, but they haven't launched a vehicle so far yet without serious delays, and production difficulties.

Again, we'll see if I'm wrong! I love EVs so I'd be happy to be wrong and see Tesla Semis in Vancouver but I wouldn't put money on it.

I haven't been looking very closely, but I don't think I've seen any Peterbilt, Kenworth, or Freightliner electric semis yet and they've been available for a couple years now.

What other companies do you include in your over-promise, under-deliver companies list? Just curious.

I'm not looking for a fight over this. Feel free to disagree.

This is all coming from a Tesla owner, by the way, so don't try to out fanboy me here.

So now they have to be in service in Vancouver? What do we get if they are?

Walmart Canada has a big order, so they might be one of the first to receive some.

There are several hypercars I've never seen in Vancouver. I guess they don't exist either.

It's fine to be pessimistic about their schedules (I have a Cybertruck reservation!) but the Semi is finally out. Just admit it.

Never changed my stance. Might I remind everyone what thread we're in?

Was that the former Ballantyne Pier cruise ship terminal that was demolished at the start of the video?

Most of it yes but unfortunately not all of it; The original Ballantyne shed somehow acquired "heritage status" at some point, so we're stuck with it forever now. You can see that that particular building getting renovated and mostly finished at the end.

You're not stuck with it, and the heritage status doesn't protect it. The part that's retained is recognised as an 'A' category buiding, in part for its historic connection to the labour history of the site. But it's not designated, so not protected. The Port chose to keep it when they built the new cruise ship terminal, and DP World chose to retain it with this latest version of the port reconfiguration. They've put a new office building behind the facade, which is their headquarters for operations of their container port.
