Sparta attracts Canadian international Brym
sparta-rotterdam.nl May 31, 2022

Charles-Andreas Brym (23) makes the switch from FC Eindhoven to Sparta Rotterdam. The French-born attacker, who has six caps for Canada in which he scored once, has signed for three seasons.

Gerard Nijkamp reacts to the signing of Brym. "He has been on our radar for some time and we followed him closely last season, and very intensively in the last period. We are convinced of his qualities. He was an important player at the well-performing FC Eindhoven, who we believe can make the step to the Eredivisie. As a multi-functional striker with a lot of potential to develop further, we knew there were many clubs interested in him. We are glad he chose Sparta and look forward to welcoming him here.”

Brym is currently on the road with the Canada national team. On June 5, he will play against Iran (cancelled), and for the Nations League he will meet Curaçao and Honduras (June 9 and 13). Canada will participate in the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Got the first 2 Canada group matches so far and will be picking up some other group games in the upcoming ticket window. Was hoping for Eng-USA but I got none of the 6 other matches I applied for!

Turnaround on the last day: FC Porto exercises option for Eustáquio

Midfielder will continue at FC Porto

On the last day that they could do so, FC Porto exercised the option to buy Stephen Eustáquio's pass (3.5 million euros), assuring Paços de Ferreira the definitive signing of the midfielder.

The Canadian international, a strong candidate for a presence in the 2022 World Cup, will be linked with FC Porto until June 2027.

Stephen Eustáquio served the second half of the 2021/22 season at FC Porto, on loan from Paços de Ferreira, having participated in 11 games.

Canada Soccer Announces Panama as New Opponent for Men’s National Team 5 June Match
canadasoccer.com May 31 2022

Canada Soccer has announced that the Men’s National Team will host Panama this Sunday 5 June at BC Place in Vancouver as part of their preparations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. The Sunday international “A” match scheduled for 16:00 PT/19:00 ET will be the first of three matches in the June FIFA window ahead of a pair of 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League A matches for both nations, with Canada ready to host Curaçao on Thursday 9 June before travelling to Honduras while Panama will host both Costa Rica and Martinique.

All tickets in the lower bowl for the Canada v Panama match will be priced at $30 to thank Canadian fans for their support in light of the recently cancelled international match and to provide an opportunity to celebrate Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team’s qualification for Qatar 2022. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday 1 June at 12:00 noon PT/15:00 ET via Ticketmaster.ca.

This will mark Canada’s first home match since qualifying for Qatar 2022 after finishing first overall in the Concacaf Final Round. It will also mark the Men’s National Team’s first match at BC Place since a 4:1 win over French Guiana on 24 March 2019 in 2018-19 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying.

Panama finished fifth in the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot behind fourth-place Costa Rica. In the Concacaf Final Round, Canada and Panama exchanged home wins, with Canada securing a 4:1 win at BMO Field and Panama winning 1:0 in the final qualifying match in Panama City. Since 1996, Canada hold a 4-6-2 record against Panama including a perfect 4-0-0 record at home in Canada.

Along with the Sunday 5 June match against Panama, Canada will face Curaçao on Thursday 9 June at BC Place and then Honduras at Estadio Olimpico in San Pedro Sula on Monday 13 June. Canada’s three June matches will air live on OneSoccer, available as a linear channel on Telus’s Optik TV(Channel 980) as well as online at OneSoccer.ca, through the OneSoccer app and on the fuboTV Canada platform. Fans will find extended coverage for the matches across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube featuring the hashtag #MNT.

CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE

This marks the second edition of Concacaf Nations League, with Canada having finished second in their group in the inaugural 2019-20 edition with a 3-0-1 record. Canada posted back-to-back wins against Cuba in September 2019 and then a home win and away loss against USA in October and November 2019. The 2:0 win against USA at BMO Field was Canada’s first against their Concacaf neighbours in 34 years. USA went on to win the inaugural competition with a 3:2 a.e.t win over Mexico on 6 June 2021.

Beyond the first two group matches in Concacaf Nations League A in June 2022, Canada will face Curaçao away on 25 March 2023 and then Honduras back home on 28 March 2023. Locations and details for those two Concacaf Nations League matches will be announced in the coming year.

CANADA SOCCER’S MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM PROGRAM

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team are the reigning Kings of Concacaf, having finished first overall in the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers from September 2021 to March 2022. It marked the third time that Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team won a Concacaf title, having previously won the 1985 Concacaf Championship and the 2000 Concacaf Gold Cup. Canada now look forward to their second participation at the men’s FIFA World Cup with group matches against Belgium on 23 November, Croatia on 27 November, and Morocco on 1 December.

Some early speculation and rumour: Jong PSV looking to keep Simon Colyn, Steven Vitoria expected to change clubs after his Portuguese Primeira Liga club Moreirense was demoted and Cyle Larin rumoured to be moving to Istanbul Basaksehir.

Canada vs Panama game cancelled over a financial dispute between the players and the CSA. Too early to make any foolish pronouncements (as many are now doing) without knowing the full story. There is more than enough blame to be shared by everybody in this one.

If anyone in Toronto has half a clue as to how to run a national soccer organization please take over. These clowns can't even sell their own highly sought after jersey let alone all these more serious debacles.

Canada soccer isn’t located in Toronto, but otherwise you’re right the problem is totally geography.

What an embarrassment for Canada. News had coverage of families who had driven from the Okanagan etc to see the cancelled game. Was the Panamanian team already in Vancouver?

Maybe its time to have a soccer Canada professional association that runs the Mens and Womens teams and another the runs the amateur side. Kinda like hockey. There is not a lot of money to go round. if the SGB is trying to run everything.

Sounds like quite the mess over there and on many fronts.

Here's hoping they can get some of it resolved before Thursday.

Edmonton confirms full commitment for FIFA World Cup 2026 ambitions
Ben Avison hostcity.com Sporting Venues June 9, 2022

Edmonton has signed an agreement with FIFA guaranteeing investment and listing suppliers to develop the Commonwealth Stadium

Cindy Medynski, Director, Edmonton Events is speaking at Host City Americas on June 29, following FIFA's announcement of the host cities on June 16.

[Source: Explore Edmonton] The City of Edmonton has today confirmed its full support for ambitions to host matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

The news comes with the formal signing of an agreement with FIFA, the final step in the process of FIFA’s Official Host City selection. The agreement includes investment guarantees irrespective of FIFA’s allocation of matches, and a shortlist of firms to assist with the advancement of facilities at the stadium and training facilities.

An announcement by FIFA on the host cities is set to be made on June 16 in New York, completing a thorough two-year process. For Edmonton, this included a visit by FIFA delegates in November 2021, during which the city hosted Canada’s FIFA World Cup 2022™ qualification match against Mexico, selling over 51,000 tickets despite winter temperatures of -9˚ Celsius.

Edmonton is one of three Canadian cities awaiting confirmation as a host city, alongside Toronto and Vancouver. Should FIFA decide to allocate host cities according to the United 2026 bid, all three would become host cities, along with three in Mexico and ten in the United States.

The City’s ambition to become a 2026 host city also enjoys vast local support, with public surveys showing a 93% favourability for the event. Community and business leaders have also been an active part of the process, including via the FIFA Champions Committee, which advises and promotes the work of the candidature. The Committee is chaired by Chief Billy Morin, chief of the Enoch Cree Nation, which forms an especially key part of Edmonton’s candidature given the city’s location on Treaty Six territory.

Edmonton has successfully hosted a range of FIFA tournaments in the past, including the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship 2002, the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2007, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2014 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015. With such experience, the city has shown unwavering commitment throughout the 2026 process.

Upon signature of the final documents, Traci Bednard, CEO of Explore Edmonton, said: “We are more excited than ever by the partnership between FIFA and the City of Edmonton. We have had tremendous experiences in hosting FIFA tournaments in the past, not only in delivering great matches and events, but also in inspiring future generations of soccer players and fans. In 2026, Edmonton will be ready to deliver once again.”

In a recent interview with Inside World Football, Canadian soccer player Alphonso Davies, who grew up in Edmonton, said: “Whenever an international soccer event has come to Edmonton, people have supported the events very well. Edmonton is a beautiful, diverse place, and I have no doubt they will accept the rest of the world exactly how they accepted me and my family when we moved here. Edmonton has some great facilities and there are a lot of things happening in the city, especially in the summer seasons.”

More information of the vision of Edmonton’s plans for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ can be seen via their website here.

June 16th FIFA will be making its announcement of host cities for the 2026 World Cup. Sounds like the two Canadian cities will be Vancouver and Toronto. Edmonton is out.

Good question. Would be a real loss for Canada to only get 2 hosts instead of the 3 prescribed in the joint bid. Hope this is not the case, there hasn't been a ton of news leaked on any of the host cities to date.
