That block is only zoned for 90'. The block immediately south where the St Austin/Greystar tower is going up is zoned for 300'. Austin's zoning is so gerrymandered.

Nueces Street in West Campus to be converted to two-way road

The city of Austin will start work this summer to convert one-way Nueces Street between 24th and Guadalupe streets into a two-way thoroughfare, part of a long-planned project that fits with the voter-approved vision to run light rail down the Drag.

The more immediate changes include installing crosswalks and a traffic signal at Nueces and Guadalupe, just 350 feet south of a signal at Guadalupe and 29th. The traffic lights would be synchronized to prevent vehicles from bunching up.

Nueces Street, which currently runs southbound only, would be repainted to establish one vehicle lane in each direction, a southbound bicycle lane, and space for truck deliveries and street parking. Northbound cyclists are expected to take Guadalupe Street to Hemphill Park and rejoin Guadalupe north of 29th Street.

Austin voters authorized the Nueces Street changes when they approved a $720 million mobility bond in 2016 that included almost $20 million for improvements to the Guadalupe Street area.

Wooten Barber Shop, mainstay on the Drag, to close to make way for new student housing

The old school decor of the Wooten Barber Shop remains mostly unchanged from when it opened in 1964, despite the urban sprawl of the Drag where it is located.

With burnt orange leather chairs and an eye-catching red and blue barber’s pole, University of Texas students and longtime locals alike can be seen chatting with one another inside the shop — but Wooten will cease operations by June 15.

“I've done this for over 60 years,” said James Nelson, barber and owner of Wooten Barber Shop.

Nelson has been cutting hair at Wooten for several decades and said he often has former students come back with their sons for haircuts. He said the connections made during haircuts keep people returning to Wooten.

“I consider it a conversation, and a haircut (just) happens,” Nelson said regarding the job.

Ah that's an address I know by heart. Probably the hardest working dominos in America. I wonder where they are planning to relocate.

I'll add that the developer is Park7 based in NYC who specializes in student housing among other things, and the site is zoned for 300 foot buildings. The small footprint would suggest a tall building.

When they downtown Domino's opened, I wondered if this one might close. I could be wrong, but I believe they are both under the same franchisee ownership.

According to an article in the new Texas Architect, there are several buildings in West Campus containing bedrooms without windows. The article is a call to arms to architects to help make that illegal. I am big proponent of more housing of all kinds, but I do not support housing that is substandard and inhumane.

Wow. Windows were part of the tenement reforms of the early 1900s in all the major northern cities.
