This has got to be happening. It's not full blown site prep, but the site is busy and the scope of the work is expanding.

I feel like I keep moving the goalposts in my head on when this will be "happening," but right now I won't truly believe it until I see concrete columns in the air... and even then there'll be some doubt crawling around the back of my head. The Intel Shell was built before I was alive, but I always think of it when a transformative project hits even the slightest stutter... too pessimistic!

It's just hard to imagine a true supertall, something over one thousand feet tall, in Austin's skyline. But well, it looks like that's what we're getting. Like I saw someone say in another thread on here today, we won't recognize downtown in 3 years.

Anyone doubting this city at this point hasn't been paying attention.

In the near future Austin will have one of the best skylines in the country to go along with of the best transit systems.

Ten years ago or less I'd have been ridiculed for making such a claim. The future is bright!

How do you figure it will be one of the best transit systems?

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the plans, and how well funded they are in perpetuity, and how outside of a handful of much larger cities in this country there will be few comparable systems.

Much like it's skyline, Austin's transit system will punch way above it's weight in a decade or so.

That's still such a long time to even have a good, existing transit system in a major city. Praying to god it comes in sooner

A decade isn't a long time when you're talking about city growth. That's actually a very short time. But I don't think that the orange and blue line will be enough to say that Austin punches above it's weight. Austin is too spread out for it to serve a good chunk of the population and it definitely under serves the east side. I'm not saying I'm against it. I'm all for it and am very excited to see it happen.

Back in 2007 or so. I often walked a lot of miles in the central areas. I remember visiting the Dobie theater and thinking how awesome it would be if a subway system stopped there inside the Dobie mall that way you can go watch an arthouse film. Anyways... Those were pipe dreams. And so is a transit system that will serve the entire Austin population in under a decade.

One thing I am excited to see is that Rainey station open up nearby to this building. When this happens I'm going to take an entire weekend and revisit Austin like a tourist taking the light rail through all the places I used to walk.

Rail transit is not the only transit.

However, in addition to the Orange and Blue lines, there will be the Green line and improvements to the Red Line.

And not in the next 10 years, but the Gold line is planned to be upgraded to rail also.

But, this isn't really the thread to have this discussion. I just brought up transit because as I said before, I believe much like our skyline, Austin is making big moves in that regard. It's all pretty exciting to be here during these times.

For sure. It's all exciting and overwhelming, even if it's not a top 10 transit system.

...ya know bragging rights

What has surprised me about this project is how no one from Houston or Dallas has come up with a taller building to top this one...ya know bragging rights. If nothing else someone would throw up a 200 foot flag pole on top of an existing building calling it a spire.

There's an excavator digging along the side of Waller Creek behind the former little food trailer site. It looks like they may be widening the creek or creating a more sloping side. It looks like a wider creek is part of the plans based on some of the street and creek level renderings I posted way back in this thread.

The next phase of the Waller Creek greenbelt (the portion closest to the lake) is also about to start.

The base is similar to 270 Park Ave in New York, but on a smaller scale (sorry, Austin... it's 366 feet shorter). The difference is that 98 Red River has vertical super columns whereas 270 Park only has angled ones. I prefer the vertical ones alongside the angled ones. It gives a sense of more sound structural integrity, even if only perceived.

(I still wish they had gone with the original design, but I guess the final one is good enough.)

270 Park Avenue:

So when this starts construction we will have a thread for it in “super tall” right? Like how crazy to see Austin in that thread group.

Not as crazy as it would have been 10 or so years ago.
