Looks like tjey're plugging along at a fast pace in demolishing that upper floor!

A render pic for reference:

found a pic of the buildings in their prime:

looks like it was all brown pediments on a yellow brick background originally.

cross comparison:

Another stylish building ruined and buried by time...

^Ruined, perhaps and buried, yes, but not beyond repair.

I worry it's gonna get the "modernist" repair though, esp. judging by the overall look they are going for - what will happen to all the original elements of the facade? I shudder to think.. the renders really don't show the front of the building so it's hard to know what their original intentions really are..

still, I must be positive, maybe they will repair the entire cornice and make the entire pediments uniform.

I am also curious as to what exists under those glass panels on the second floor - is any of the original facade left under it?

There's likely not much under there, compare it with this photo you sent earlier;

sigh, yeah that's what I was afraid of - and I have yet to see a single one of these types of pediments rebuilt and restored onto a building anywhere in the entire city.. I wonder if they even have the ability to rebuild them these days - it's one thing to do stone.. but I have a feeling these may be metal.. although I could be wrong, it's REALLY hard to tell - but metal pediments have been used in the city in other places..

the fact they were able to butcher old buildings like this is just appalling.. it's also fascinating to watch its deterioration just from the first old pic to the second old pic, to now.

also just noticed there are 4 columns of windows on the left, and 3 on the right..

at least we have learned one thing - that brick was spraypainted brown - it's naturally yellow underneath like the part to the left - maybe a sodablasting can remove that and restore it..

Is this now under construction? Or is this just demo of the parts proposed to be replaced?

Interesting photo, drpgq. The way the Connaught lines up with the foreground building is kind of Escher-esque.

That would be demolition, but I believe this is going to mostly be an addition, not a whole new project. So I would consider it U/C.

^Hmmm I had no idea they'd be demolishing that wall. Will they clean up the stone and reinstall it?

Seems they are leaving the brick up, and going to clean it, they just demolished the back portion.

this is pretty much exactly how I saw it yesterday - assuming they needed the steel reinforcement due to the addition of floors - it's crazy to see the old thick rafters - almost looks like there may have been fire damage at some point.. pretty excited to see this all come to fruition - it's basically just a shell at this point.

Perhaps they've had to be more careful with the new structure given the older parts being retained (and the common wall with the neighbouring building)

But if it merely indicates they're going for quality over speed, I'm all for that!
