I agree. Part of the 80s boom. 301 all new and shiny. And Hobby, all alone and even though a lowrise, it stood out. I still don't hate it. The pic looking south down Congress....great pic. Can't quite make out the something Girl Shop French Room, but I'm guessing it got busy when the politicos where in town. The cops are there so I'm assuming there was some sketchy fun going on inside. Congress Ave. must have looked pretty cool at night with all the signs lit. 7up, the all family drink. Strange slogan. They wanted to make sure everyone knew this carbonated lemony sugar bomb wasn't just for the kids, but for mom and dad too. No lane stripes and traffic lights that seem easy to miss attached to the light poles. Don't see how cars in the middle lanes could see them very well. Kind of wish I could travel back in time to experience Austin in that era. Last picture, okay! A genuine downtown, rather dense with some height. And then all those long and narrow businesses. Looks a bit like a bundled trailer park.
Lastly, the Congress Ave. Bridge expansion. Out of necessity or insight? Curious that they didn't feel the need to paint lane strips back then to seperate vehicles or designate cross walks.
