Whatever it was, it's now a surface-level parking lot.

I'm not sure of the exact date since none was given, but the Texas Rangers Monument is present, and it was built in 1907. It's the one in the upper left alongside the driveway.

I've posted this one before, but it's clearly dated and also easy to tell it's old because the only monument there so far is the Heroes of the Alamo one that was dedicated in 1891. Missing is the Fireman's monument that was built in 1896.

This also shows the old 1876 Travis County Courthhouse that was torn down in 1964 for...a parking lot.

I see four of them in the photo. The night time lighting back then must have been pretty cool.

That's the First Baptist Church. Since it was opened in 1915, the photo had to be after that date.

it's hard to make out in the photo, but I think the Orsay tenant house can be seen on 14th street east of the capitol. Here's photos and drawings from the Library of Congress.

On the LOC site, you can also find more photos and drawings on the Lundbert Bakery on 10th and Congress.

I love the capitol drawings on the LOC.

I think there is a fifth one on the west side of Congress near the river. It can barely be seen.

The Hobby Building and 301 Congress look really cool in the second photo. I still think that part of the Hobby Building looks pretty nice, but the low-rise bits... Yikes.

I agree. Part of the 80s boom. 301 all new and shiny. And Hobby, all alone and even though a lowrise, it stood out. I still don't hate it. The pic looking south down Congress....great pic. Can't quite make out the something Girl Shop French Room, but I'm guessing it got busy when the politicos where in town. The cops are there so I'm assuming there was some sketchy fun going on inside. Congress Ave. must have looked pretty cool at night with all the signs lit. 7up, the all family drink. Strange slogan. They wanted to make sure everyone knew this carbonated lemony sugar bomb wasn't just for the kids, but for mom and dad too. No lane stripes and traffic lights that seem easy to miss attached to the light poles. Don't see how cars in the middle lanes could see them very well. Kind of wish I could travel back in time to experience Austin in that era. Last picture, okay! A genuine downtown, rather dense with some height. And then all those long and narrow businesses. Looks a bit like a bundled trailer park.
Lastly, the Congress Ave. Bridge expansion. Out of necessity or insight? Curious that they didn't feel the need to paint lane strips back then to seperate vehicles or designate cross walks.

It's incredible to note how small Austin was and how the Capitol was surrounded by so many homes and older buildings that were wiped out by parking garages!
