Wish they’d do something to fancy up the lower floors, it’s an odd looking building. My understanding is the lower portion is a parking garage.

A recent CBC news segment talked about The City of Summerside and all the commercial, residential development and immigration reported coming out of City Hall. Mayor Stewart painted it as being glowing.
I think they are being extremely optimistic. The forecasted population increase from 2016-2019 was 325.
Charlottetown's CA increase was over 8,000+ and Stratford is closing in on a population of 11,000. Last census there put the increase at 13.2%.
Am I missing something or is my math just not adding up with their optimism.

I have lived in Summerside since 1993 and work for one of the towns largest employers. While there are definitely more people in town and lots of new immigrants, I would not say the town is growing anywhere near what Stratford or cornwall is. There is some positive development near Credit Union Place and a large Apt building on the waterfront.

I read the article and I saw it as positive spin by elected officials to drum up more business. Having said that, the town has come a long way since I moved here 27 years ago.

Your right, on that. My son lives in Summerside, and I've always had a special attachment to it since I have many friends there. I asked the question to my son and he said there is some development and new things coming online. Nice to see but there is some feedback that the Credit Union Place is pulling the city down financially. Just some Summerside folks were bringing that up online.
BTW, did they ever do anything with the old Holland College building on Granville? I spent a full year at college there. Last I heard it was still there. Any indications of development in that area?
My son also said that Starbucks is no longer in Summerside! What happened there?

The last census (2016) showed the population of Summerside had decreased slightly since the previous one (2011). So if the population is now increasing, that will reverse the trend. If, as the CBC news segment says, there is more commercial & residential development happening, that would tell me that Summerside is now growing and not shrinking as it was before.

I have followwed the census figures herwe ad they never a huge increase or decrease y over year. It is tghe next census that has me curious. The town is noticeably busier. A cabbie told me he noticing much more traffic on the road / more calls come int o their st and. Our numbers are not huge like a Halifax, Moncton or St. Johns but they appear to be going in the right direction.

The Holland College building is boarded up. APM is waiting for the right opportunity. Starbucks was a flop. very few people would pay premium prices for a coffee. the store is now a Cannabis PEI Store which is not a very busy spot either.

Wow, still boarded up!! It's like the old Pickard machinery business at belvedere and university in Charlottetown. Just sitting there. What a waste of land!
That's funny about Starbucks and the Cannabis store in its place. Sorry but it made me chuckle!! At least the spot is being utilized unlike the HC location and Pickards location.
On another note, I heard Winners is opening a store in S'side. My daughter works at the Charlottetown location and really finds the company good to work for and it's a very busy spot.

Still in Summerside, I saw a new Apartment/townhouse being constructed near the Pizza Delight. I was having a drink at Evermore Pub last night and someone told me that they are building a second apartment building on the waterfront next to the seven floor one currently under construction. I do not know the person who told me this so I am unsure if the individual is in the know or not. I also have my doubts as to whether there is enough room for a 2nd building on this lot.

Speaking of that 7 floor apartment. Anyone hear what the rent is yet?

Another nice looking 24 unit apartment building proposed for 288 University Ave.

A proposal for 2 - 30 unit apartments at 72-74 Kensington Road. There is already a 30 unit apartment being constructed at this location. If the plan goes through, 90 units will be constructed in total of similar design.
