Although I can appreciate what Steely is saying--especially as the tower canyon gets better over the next 10-20 years.

I don't like that tall fencing. Decorative or not, it feels like a cattle chute.

The second example I think would be great... just build small "sliver" parks adjacent to the sidewalks. You get some of the benefits of a full cap at a fraction of the cost. Here's another example in Columbus:

#2 would be fine, but the kennedy's wacky-ass center on-ramps would make implementing such a plan more difficult.

Noone in Wisconsin says "expressway" or "freeway". . . they just refer to any limited access roadway - whether or not it serves as an interstate - as "the I". . .

^^ Love the #2 example in Atlanta and seems much more financially feasible. But the middle onramps in the west loop might be a hindrance.

I'm also from WI and grew up saying freeway. I've been in Chicago long enough that I've migrated to expressway so people stop looking at me funny... for that reason at least, they still look at me funny for other reasons.

The 2nd example in Atlanta looks great! I would be really happy with that one, if we don't do a full capping, which doesn't seem likely at this time. From the street it looks like a park.

Washington, Monroe, and Fulton Market don't have middle ramps. Lake, Adams, and Jackson only have middle ramps on one side of the street. They would have to leave space for the ramps, but the rest of the street could have that kind of treatment.

true, only madison and randolph have the double middle on-ramp on both side of the overpass.

maybe it wouldn't be as difficult to implement that atlanta "garden bridge" idea as i first though.

There was supposedly a bomb threat on the Red Line yesterday that threw off rush hour in the evening.

Anyone know why Chicago is stagnating and Southern California has surpassed us? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but we have been a solid number 2 for a long time.

Because Chicago is often overlooked in any category of things deemed culturally relevant?

Would anyone even know? After all, stuff like Michelin is always going to be subjective, fad-oriented and fleeting.

The same place gets old, something new gets exciting, then the new thing gets stale, and you re-discover the old.

Probably explains why the West Loop is suddenly so heavily represented.

Quote:
But all is not lost for the Windy City, which sees movement at the lower end of greatness. There are five new one-star spots—and they’re all located in one neighborhood: the West Loop, a former meatpacking district that’s now home to such companies as Google, McDonald’s (corporate world headquarters), LinkedIn, and Dyson.

"It just so happens that the West Loop was a nexus this year. Hopefully, next year we’ll see other areas represented,” says the chief inspector of Michelin’s U.S. Team, who spoke to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity.
Regarding Southern California, it has one advantage in that it is viewed as a "region" and thus I'm wagering that Michelin reviewers are scouring the whole metro, not just Los Angeles proper. For Chicago, there is almost zero suburban representation because over here the city is everything and the suburbs are cast aside as no-man's land. However, there are some excellent restaurants in the burbs--as good as anything in the city--but they don't appear to be getting a visit from Michelin representatives, or so I've heard.

That's not how Michelin guide works. There is no comparison from one city to the other. It's not a tool for comparing whether Alinea is better than some other restaurant in NYC or LA. It's very explicit in it's purpose: a guide for diners who may not be familiar with the area they are travelling to. This is literally just a list of recommendations, it's not some ranking, it's an award.

Unless it's changed this year, not only are the burbs not represented but large swaths of the city aren't either. The boundary in Chicago is something like Lawrence to the north, Western to the west, and I think Garfield to the south. It was explained in a tribune article I read last year but now I'm having trouble finding it.

Anyhow, with that consideration, 25 starred restaurants is pretty damn impressive over a relatively small area.

EDIT: aha: https://www.chicagotribune.com/dinin...927-story.html
