It makes me sad to think we'll never get that back and that future generations will not know the Austin where that building existed. It wasn't a great building or anything but it carried with it a culture of an older Austin.

We need more brick in this city. At least at the ground floor level.

Get yer fightin' gloves out over the rest of the warehouse district...
!
I'm ready.
Gotta keep some older character in this city as we get Some worthwhile buildings..
,... this NOT being one of those.
Will do anything to stop it from becoming "ANY WHERE" USA.

The gays will certainly come out fighting if any of our bars and clubs down there are threatened.

Sigh....
A: hopefully it won't be left to us ...I assume there are folks left with some depth to help. But if not... and it's reduced to that, then Hell, I'm in.
B: I worked in that area long before 4th was gay mega.... it will evolve again I'm sure... hopefully still contributing to the more unique fabric of the city and not just "Bigger is better Dallas mentality".
C: Personally I don't really frequent those clubs as much anymore.... It is indeed more about the Warehouse district. So for me , it's not about "Bar's" its about texture , the history ( not to be confused with officially "historial" and downtown community .

So I'll invite you and others to join the 'cause and maybe get a cocktail along the way.

For a city our size, there are very few gay bars. This is it. This is where the Pride Parade is centered. 4th St is the hub of gay culture in Austin. That should be protected.

I agree. When on occasion I travel to downtown, since I don't have a convertible, I like areas where there are older, stone and brick structures I can see and feel the history and culture of Austin without straining my neck looking up. Where there are low slung buildings, there are taller ones in the background and that's what I like. A mix of both. It kind of makes me appreciate surface parking in that sense. I don't want a Dallas, or Houston. I want an Austin. When all the places of interest are gone, I just assume seeing downtown from I35 or a distance, just like when I drive PASSED not through Dallas and Houston. In my 30+ years in Texas, I have never cruised around their downtowns.

Yas gorrl you bet your ass we will.

I can't help feeling, and I think I've said this once on the main update thread, that we are crying apocalypse too soon over the warehouse district. It's worth noting that this is the first building actually demolished in the immediate surrounding blocks for a new development. It's certainly the first one that was previously occupied by a lucrative business. 5th/Colorado, Colorado Tower, and 405 Colorado all were built or will be built on empty lots.

ZaZa's lot was nearly empty except for one structure who's facade is painstakingly being incorporated into the new building, and that building itself is the only one of the current boom that is entirely clad in brick. Brick! The buildings at 5th/Lavaca have been depressed for a long time and could stand to be redeveloped IMO.

Also...the gay bars. OCH is a fixture and an institution, and the rest of the block is spoken for.

In sum, let's all take a big chill pill for a second about the whole district getting bulldozed, sit back and enjoy the show.

The reason why there is concern is because I was told in passing by a friend who works at one of the clubs that two developers are looking to build highrises that would take out OCH, Sellers and Rain along with Halcyon, Cedar Street and those other buildings on the other side. I will work on getting more specific details as soon as I can and hope that it is nothing more than a rumor but nevertheless it's worth taking notice.

What? There’d be mass protests.

This sounds like it could be a case of something being said, and then being repeated multiple times, and gradually morphing into something completely different from the original statement.

My guess is that the original statement was referring to the Parsley Energy building. But people who don't know any better misheard something and/or got confused as things went down the line.

This one is moving right along. A tower crane permit was filed today.
