Milage markers do make sense here. At least in areas with less urban buildup. On the Forestry trunk road last week every KM was marked.

On 881 there are mileage makers near most gravel roads. It helps find a lease site. I remember having to drive to a pump station for Enbridge, I was given the mileage marker and told to drive 25km east after turning off 881.

I believe the Highest KM marker on the TCH in New Brunswick is 516 KM. So that is the distance from the NS border to the Quebec border. I thought that was a good distance. at 1500 Km to 1800 Km in Ontario, no wonder people who have driven the entire length say they feel like the province will never end.

KM markers also serve the emergency vehicles. If you call 911 from the middle of nowhere and you are not sure where you are, the operator may say what is the last KM marker you remember seeing.

The highest I've seen on Highway 11 is 1332 km, that one is just north of Red Rock.

The highest I've seen on Highway 17 is 1540 (maybe 1541?) just east of Coniston.

According to Google Ontario highway 17 is 1964 KM long. This is from the Manitoba border to where the highway becomes the 400 series 417 NW of Ottawa.

There are mileage markers near Red Rock??? I guess I need to drive that highway sometime. Last time I went to Nipigon the highway there was little more than a cow path.

.... and then almost 200km of highway 417 to the Quebec border....

If ever twinned, 417 could have mile markers in the 2100s.

It seems as though Ontario Hwy 17 has had the markers for awhile now from the Manitoba border to Shabaqua Corners. (where it joins with Hwy 11) The interesting thing is that the markers are every 2 Kilometres and there are markers on each side of the highway unlike how it's done on most highways in the Northeast.

Km 284
https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.4554874,-...WFHwVJl8XGp09GEpp-UpQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
Km 400
https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.0508651,-...7RVBzb_3xVI7iJ_ylyggw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Kilometre 478 near Shabaqua Corners:https://www.google.ca/maps/@48.6102246,-...CPBpp1eBuNI9YF8dF5lnw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Also confirmed that Hwy 11 has them West of Shabaqua Corners.

Here is Km 1782 just East of Fort Frances. https://www.google.ca/maps/@48.683823,-9..._4xxLeRxXs_0hJ6xmbjRg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
I'm guessing that they now go all the way to Rainy River. Streetview was done in 2012 only as far West as Fort Frances. It was previously done to Rainy River in 2009 before any of the markers were put up.

They're on 11 north of Nipigon. My bad.

I use mileage markers all the time!

For hiking: "Park on the side of the road, just after km 141. You'll see the trailhead."

For understanding distance and gauging time: "I have to get off at exit 230 to go to Steve's place, and I have to be at his place by 8:00, and we're at exit 450 now and it's 6:45, so we won't make it on time."

And for fun, trivial knowledge "Oh, the last exit before the Quebec border on the 401 is 825, and the Turcot interchange is exit 68 on A-20, so it's roughly 900 km from downtown Montreal to downtown Detroit".

We use directions like "Highway 11/17, 33km south of Nipigon", but the person driving is expected to watch what their odometer says and keep track that way.

Same here. I haven't yet heard anyone refer to the mileage markers around here. They were put up by and are mainly for the companies that have highway maintenance contracts with the MTO.

^I'm in Peterborough right now. They're extending the 407 as far as the 115 near Kirby.

It's a crosstown arterial, not a highway, but unsure where else to post this.

We're getting our first major roundabouts, by our standards, the largest at the intersection of Prince Philip Drive and Thorburn Road, between Memorial University and the Avalon Mall.

And two others along Prince Philip Drive where it passes by the Health Sciences Complex and Memorial University. A typical example:

Quote:
Traffic along Prince Philip Drive in St. John's is in for a major overhaul.

The city is planning three roundabouts for three major intersections on Prince Philip Drive: Allandale Road, Clinch Crescent, as well as at Columbus Drive and Thorburn Road.

The plans come as a result of the Memorial University (MUN) Area Traffic Study, which was launched in 2014, to examine the traffic problems caused by the growing facilities at the university and at the Health Sciences Centre.

The study states that those three intersections "operate at very poor levels of service" and concludes the problem couldn't be fixed with adjustments to the traffic signals or lights.

Instead, multi-lane roundabouts are recommended for each of the intersections.

The conversation surrounding this is cracking me up. At least half of people are complaining they or others don't know how to use roundabouts, the rest telling them that's not anyone else's responsibility and they should take a driving course. But one guy absolutely nailed it:

"Typical Newfoundland style - a little behind the times with no roundabouts, then overnight one for every intersection. Oh you don't have a Mexican restaurant? Here's 30."

I think it's a very bold and smart strategy to replace pretty much all our high-traffic intersections with single and multi-lane roundabouts. So smart that I fear that the whole plan won't be put into action. The first three roundabout sketches are going to be done, with Prince Philip at Alandale being the first conversion (which is the 3rd most dangerous intersection in the city), with Prince Philip/Thorburn/Columbus (the largest intersection in the city/province) being 5th.

You clearly have not experienced the Armdale Rotory in Halifax. I purposely avoided it at all costs when I lived there.

Is it actually low or just low by bigger city standards? I end up basically parked on that street during rush hour.
