The anglophone media in Canada to my knowledge never used "center"* but it's true they did use "honor", "color", "favor", etc. for a long time, until a couple of decades ago.

*Well, they may have used "center" very sporadically, but it would have been a mistake, or at least contrary to the style guide for Canadian newspapers.

I guess its depends on where you live. In my experience, Alberta has been more liberal with the spellings than in Toronto. Anyone that grew up in Toronto has it ingrained in them to use the British spelling. This extends to almost all aspect of life in Toronto. I can't say if it was always that way. It definitely predates the 1990s. The local media have been an outlier if they have used American variants in my lifetime.

So the grass and grounds crew have graduated with honours. Glad we have that cleared up.

Such great students they were.

In my experience English spelling and usage generally tilt more toward U.S. standards as you go westwards. (With some exceptions in border areas like Windsor and Niagara.)

Nothing is ever 100% air tight, but in addition to spelling you also have words like "semi" for a transport truck or 18-wheeler you hear more commonly in the West, also spelling the date MDY, etc. French-influenced stuff like CV instead of resumé* is also far less common than in central-eastern Canada. (*Ironically, the more anglo usage of the two is actually a French word.)

It's interesting because in terms of culture, the Prairies in particular are arguably a Heartland Canada type of place: CFL, curling, hockey, Corner Gas, Little Mosque, etc.

I think we've had enough posts examining how to spell. There are other threads for that sort of chatter.

Apparently OSEG lost a substantial amount of money for the second straight year. Are several of the businesses there struggling?

I find that astounding considering that they run 3 very successful, well-drawing teams in relatively low-overhead leagues. I wonder if this isn't just the usual pro sports book-cooking to show a big loss in a way that would benefit them somehow?

67s don't draw well. They routinely fetch 2k-3k/game. Arena is in a coma for 85% of games through a season. It's a pretty dreadful atmosphere. arguably the worst of any junior hockey team in Canada.

As the (mostly lazy) CBC article doesn't state, OSEG losing money now simply means the potential for higher revenues at the end of Lansdowne's lifecycle is higher. I don't really think OSEG is concerned about the bottom line of Lansdowne in 2016 when in 2022/2023 they'll be making easy money.

Here's what the CBC article failed to mention:

OSEG especially wants to boost attendance at Ottawa 67s games in 2017, hoping to use the club’s 50th anniversary as a rallying point.

Hosting the Grey Cup and an NHL outdoor game later this year are also expected to help revenue rise 16 per cent over 2016.

^ Interesting, I didn't realize that the situation was quite so dire for the 67s... I thought they were still a fairly well drawing team.

Season averages:
14-15: 3,604
15-16: 3,484
16-17: 3,863

Moving out to Kanata for a couple years really didn't help.

That's actually probably middle of the pack or slightly better in terms of averages across the OHL.

While it's true that Ottawa is one of the larger markets in the league, that's not always a guarantee of better attendance. Especially with an NHL club to compete with.

Ottawa draws below OHL average.

The 67s are outdrawn by every other team with an NHL team in their market by quite a bit (outside of the Vancouver Giants who are also moving around in their market). Places like Guelph, Niagara, Windsor routinely outdraw the 67s. Having a middle-of-the-road, average team for a few seasons doesn't help Ottawa's case.

Ten years ago the 67s were averaging nearly triple what they are today.

Hamilton would give them a run for their money.

Haven't been to an OHL game in Hamilton but I don't doubt it. Both play in arenas much too large but Ottawa has the added benefit of being a sports market where most people in attendance are so cautious and tame that they're afraid to make any sort of noise or show any sort of emotion whatsoever. You can go to 67s games and sit in the back row and hear the coaches instructing players on the bench. It's mausoleumesque.

I don't really include Mississauga in the same area as Toronto for the simple reason that they're not playing within the city (like the Majors before them) and are much more GTA. If we include Missisauga into that category we'd be including Oshawa, as well. Mississauga doesn't draw well and Oshawa draws very well. Calgary and Edmonton WHL both draw well and the Remparts, who play in an NHL arena, draw well as well.

Have you ever been to a RedBlacks game? Lots of noise and emotion there.

A few pictures from last night. All set for the opening game at New Mosaic Stadium. Kickoff at 7pm. The stadium is amazing. Especially the Plaza areas outside of the stadium. Great spot to have a pre/post game party.

Argh. Posting pictures on this forum from a mobile phone is so annoying. Here is the link to my Flickr album.
