I feel like that whole stretch of sidewalk needs to be redone.. it's in very poor shape and not aesthetically pleasing at all.

Wheelchair access or not, how can city approve this ramp in a public sidewalk? Other businesses don't have this.
Not only that I still feel an accident will happen in this area since this seems to be the cities "Quick fix" idea, and for myself I have a little bit of a hard time on slopped sidewalks, and have avoided this area ever since. It's still quite steep.

I agree with this. The sidewalk from Weldon to the Stapples Drugs parking lot seems to have never been fixed over the years, and continue to deteriorate.

As I said before this is just an accident waiting to happen.

Hmm, wheelchair accessibility would probably be the main reason. With a bike shop in there, it's also easier to wheel bikes in and out of the business too.

But yeah, it does look really strange. Hopefully it doesn't impede snow removal too much too.

I'm not familiar with the area; are the three businesses inside that entrance, or are the three businesses side by side by side there? If the three are inside and that's the same entrance to all three, then that might be why the other places don't have that hump; it could be a quirk of the accessibility bylaws that a public entrance to multiple businesses need to be accessible while a singular business entrance can get away without.

I'm not sure about all of them but i can tell you Keystone Physio has always been in that building. Not sure why they would be considered new, unless they are changing units maybe.

They're spending all of that money beautifying St. George Street and renovating these buildings, but straight sidewalks is what they decide to cheap out on? Really? Three lumps and three dips in a 50 foot walking area? It is that complicated and expensive to straighten out the whole thing, rather then multiple patch jobs?

Beautiful render David...my top hope for St George remains burying the power lines as that would have the largest impact on the street, the lines make it appear very messy and disheveled...a close second on my list is a sidewalk and roadway upgrade like your render

The city has chosen to name their newly acquired park in front of Castle Manor in honour of Rene-Arthur Frechet.

This seems only fitting as he was the architect who designed Castle Manor in the first place, and seems like a much better choice than the original controversial move to rename that park in Sunny Brae after him. I think this choice should satisfy everyone.

Well it is fitting for the area for sure. But of course you know there is at least one person who will not be happy with the name. Look at what happen when the owners of the land (When privately owned) cut down 1 tree, and cut some broken branches off the other tree. People lost there minds. A land name change from nothing to something. Thats insane

I agree 100%. I just Wiki his name and now I agree even more. At least now, the land can be secured for future decades and any developer or owner of Castle Manor wouldn't have to worry.

The Croissants & Conversation session discussing downtown development options is currently ongoing at the Capitol Theatre. Alas. I am working and not able to attend.

They were talking about this on CBC radio this morning. A couple of points made by the interviewees:
- The city has been in talks with 15 potential developers regarding projects in the downtown area since the events centre began construction.
- The future of the DT depends on increased residential development in the core. This will drive everything else.
- They are looking at re-establishing a street grid system south of Main Street in the formerly industrial lands in order to expedite development in this area.
- They want to increase the focus on the riverfront area.

If anyone went to this session, it would be good to hear a report........

Any idea what they're suggesting here? Are we talking about Albert St? The baseball diamonds?

I fail to see where a new grid system can be built. Lots of hindrance from existing buildings, private parking lots, wetlands & the railway...

This is the only image I could find so far. Anyone good at squinting?

I saw a picture somewhere yesterday .. the street would start on downing and run to lutz, roughly following the current "street" in the assumption parking lot, passing between the market(market is eventually moving) and rogers building then ending by colpitts across from the entrance to heritage place.

The concept makes sense but.. would cost big $$$ or something to get all that land.

What's interesting is it seems to follow an old CN Rail ROW from downing to foundry on the exact path.. maybe it's more possible then I thought if they can get it from CN.

If this is what they are trying to accomplish, I would be interested to know if they mean to extend this street eastwards as far as Downing Street. A traditional thoroughfare would be at odds with the current vision for Downing Street unless they also intend for this new street to also be a mixed use pedestrian/low volume vehicular roadway like Downing.

I gather none of the forumers were actually at the presentation to ask questions like this........

Found on the city's Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/2276022885956509/

Edit: in any event, I'd like to be optimistic but we've seen this before... new exciting visions every few years that deliver underwhelming tangible results.

From the picture pierremoncton posted, it looks like they are planning to have Westmorland similar to Downing, which would be interesting to see. They also have a weird half circle off of Foundry, it looks like it would be right through the current parking lot..

Maybe when the next venture at the old cosmo fails, they can tare it down and build a parking garage there for assumption/DMV. That new street looks like it's going to run perpendicular to assumption place and may eat into some of their parking.
