Hm - not sure where you've been in the past 26 years. Vancouver has mandated sprinklers for one and two-family dwellings since April 1990. That would have been under Mayor Gordon Campbell. NPA.
Really? I'm almost 100% sure the rental my family lived in while we renovated our house was built post-1990 and I don't think it had sprinklers.

Are sprinklers also required of renovated homes?

Would be interesting to know how they plan on dealing with the problem as it is sinking with speed.
We have lots of sinking buildings here in Mexico City. In many cases it causes absolutely no damage to the building itself because it's built on a solid foundation, the problem is a large part of the city is built on a dry lake bed and the groundwater underneath the soil is constantly being pumped out and not replenished. So the foundation sinks along with the ground but the road generally does not sink (or at least not as fast)

After the 1985 earthquake there are lots of buildings you see where the first floor is now at ground level and you have to take stairs down to the ground floor.

Sprinklers definitely needed mostly because houses here are like matchsticks: woodframe homes. Less likely to catch fire with pre-fab concrete, regular concrete, cinder-block or brick houses.

What's with the "latest new posts" section not working on Vancouver sub-forum main page?

Billboard on East Hastings Street. Don't have a car? No problem, they now have a lane for shopping carts.

I have to admit that I am a bit proud having made it to Liebherr - the world's largest tower crane manufacturer's - official corporate calendar.

This photo will be hanging on the walls of hundreds of constructions sites and offices around the world in August.

Wow! Congratulations Klaus! That's awesome news.

I like how they photoshopped the crane away from Trump tower.

Thank you, guys!

It was indeed a nice surprise to get an inquiry to be part of their annual corporate calendar. Their marketing team over in Germany had discovered my photos posted on this forum and was interested to consider few shots for the calendar. This is the one they ended up choosing from few samples I provided.

Unfortunately I don't think these are sold anywhere. It was kind of them to send me a copy of the final calendar. It's actually really cool, with Liebherr tower cranes on very different projects. Loving how tower cranes look in a skyline, I am really happy to have this calendar and be part of it.

Haha, I didn't even notice! They didn't ask me to do that, so they must have done it afterwards. Pretty funny, but it wasn't a Liebherr crane so there is no place in the corporate calendar.

Thanks for all the warm words. If anything, this shows once again that construction companies pay lots of attention to the discussion on forums like this. Maybe we can change the spandrel tsunami by continuing to complain against it!

Looking for a building manager?

Hey guys and gals,

I just finished my Building Manager certificate at VCC (A- avg.) and I'm on the job hunt now for a position as a resident rental building manager. Without getting into any of my personal details on the open forum, if anyone with any job leads could send me a private message with any questions or information, it would be much appreciated.

Thank You!
K.J.S.

I had no idea that the seattle UW extension opened this year, i thought it was still years away. And the first hill street car opened too.

Why would anyone go public with this kind of story? Do they actually expect sympathy, or "Olsen on Your Side" type coverage:

Imagine, for a second, you’d just shelled out $200,000 for a very rare sports car that was made famous by the James Bond movies. Then, fast forward the dream scenario and picture a nightmare where you crash the car — a very lightly-used, Aston Martin DB9 in Skyfall silver — have only basic insurance and are facing a $132,000 repair bill. That is, however, exactly the situation a Richmond resident, Jessica Liu, finds herself in, having driven the stunning limited edition — only 100 were made — for only a few kilometres before she inexplicably veered off the road and hit a large stone near Blundell and Garden City roads in December 2015. It has been more than a year since Liu — who regularly travels to and from China on business — has driven the car and seven months since she has even seen it...

I'm sad there isn't a video of the interview or the crash. That's just plain disgraceful.

Why else would people think luxury sports cars are exclusive if they weren't heinously expensive?

Thank goodness she didn't have comprehensive insurance or we would all be paying for this. Since the image on the page was taken in December 2015, she probably bought the car, and drove it in less than ideal winter weather on relatively new tires. With a high powered car, that's a recipe for disaster.

Motorcyclists usually take it very easy for the first few hundred km on a new set of tires because the tires remain really slippery until the initial coatings wear off. They're basically coated in oil to stop the tire from degrading while in storage.

I am sometimes receiving letters addressed to the previous tenant at our address. How does one return such letters to the sender? Do I need to take them to a post office or do I just drop them in a mail box? Do I need to indicate something on top of the letter to have them returned to the sender?

Canada Post's website wasn't 100% clear on the steps, so I figured someone in here will surely know. Thank you in advance.
