It is one of the worst streets in Canada more than embarrassing one should post pictures in the Canada page under the worst streets let it be known maybe they will clean up there act

Bylaw officers don't want to deal with commercial land owners. What about the mess near CMS on 8th? The junk spills over their fence and people dump couches and other garbage on the sidewalk next to it, but no one is every forced to clean it up.

Re: Sask. Dr. between Albert& Elphinstone-- I moved back to Saskatchewan in 1984, and that section is still an embarrassment to the city of Regina. In over 34 years there has been zero effort to do something about this eye sore!! Come Regina we can do better than this, can't we??

Saskatchewan drive

I think most of the land is/was owned by the railway. We looked into buying a chunk years ago and one item that the Railway had built into their contracts is that they were not responsible for any ground contamination. As the railway has pretty well been there since Regina's beginning and all kinds of freight carrying contaminated goods, petroleum products, etc. have travel down there I think the odds are there would be contaminated soil there. We decided not to move forward because of that clause. Only big guns like Railways seem to be able to ignore things like contaminated soil removal and shift that to the land purchaser.
Not sure if it still that way but maybe that is why that stretch has not been developed much. I also think that the setback from the tracks was a fairly large distance so you had to move your new structure/building very close to Saskatchewan drive making you put parking between your new building and the tracks cutting down on client parking and delivery access.

I think the only way to move forward on that chunk of land is the same way that is proposed for the old yards on Dewdney... City buys it & covers the clean-up cost. In theory, if the section were more desirable, private sector might see it as worthwhile to buy & clean-up, but I'm doubtful any would for those odd, tiny parcels of land.

As with other things (old rail yard, rail lines across Ring Road, rail relocation in general), the rail companies have no reason to proactively make these changes. And the City & Province have essentially no power over the rail companies. The Feds have a degree of power, but they're not going to expend political capital on matters which are of very little consequence nationally.

In a move that surprises no one, Wascana Centre Authority has approved the Conexus building on the College Avenue Campus.
University’s partnership with Conexus moving to next phase

...well, they've approved "non-conforming use" - which allows the UofR & Conexus to move forward with designing. This approval is essentially akin to a City rezoning approval. Rezoning itself is just the groundwork - building permits, business licences, etc are still required. As with the City, these are largely formalities - so long as the UofR & Conexus comply with Wascana's design standards.

I encourage all right-thinking UofR graduates let the university know you will never donate to them ever again over this.

I don't like it. I've never denied that. As someone on council outright admitted, if this was any other bank, the answer would have been no. But I sincerely hope that they are held to some design standard even though it wouldn't be cheap to match the rest of the buildings they are linking up with.

Are there any renders of the building?

Hope to god its not like the addition to the old Sask Wheat Pool building. That was (and still is) an abomination.

That's the spirit. The reason why the U of R has to do this sort of partnership is because there aren't enough donations. Not donating to the U of R will certainly put an end to the U of R's seeking these sorts of partnerships.

In fact, this project may get me to donate more to my alma mater. And I hope the exterior looks just like the one at New Mosaic.

If only that were remotely true. 1. The "donation" is a drop in the bucket. 2. The University has not been good stewards of donations anyway.

Most of all, you should never donate to university with other, true charities needing money. Like the CNIB... er Brandt.

I hope you have a source for that statement.

The fact is the U of R cannot do the badly needed upgrades to the College Ave Campus without the help of private sources since the govt funds our universities so poorly.

We want our institutions to find new funding models and when they do, we're all up in arms. But it could be worse. The U of S built a power centre with a Wal-Mart and Cabellas. The other option... fund our universities.

See: bloat, administration. See: Darke Hall, condition over the last decades.

Using excess land to build a commercial venture is preferable to allowing one off favors to local companies who will sully one of the few good things about Regina. When the University keeps deliberately lying about the "donation" you know they have lost the argument and simply being whores.

I suppose when you learn that that Brandt's plan is for a strictly commercial venture (that is, their HQ is not part of the plan whatsoever) you'll just be like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ cuz it'll "help" the park.

Joining Guns n' Roses and completing core services review on mayor's list for 2017 Craig Baird, Regina Leader-Post
More from Craig Baird, Regina Leader-Post

Published on: December 14, 2016 | Last Updated: December 14, 2016 3:18 PM CST

Mayor Michael Fougere started early Wednesday morning giving his year-in-review presentation to Regina Chamber of Commerce at the Conexus Arts Centre. BRYAN SCHLOSSER / Regina Leader-Post

Mayor Michael Fougere answered several questions at the Regina & District Chamber of Commerce breakfast Wednesday, but it was the last question that received the most applause. When asked whether or not he would jam with Axl and Slash of Guns n’ Roses in August, Fougere was quick to respond he would jump at the opportunity.

“I am so happy I was asked that question because as you know I play drums,” Fougere said. “I don’t do it very well but if I was asked to do it, I would do it.”

Apart from the possibility of becoming a rock star in August, Fougere spoke on Regina’s accomplishments of 2016 and his hopes for 2017.

“Here is our vision: Regina will be Canada’s most vibrant, inclusive, attractive, sustainable community, where people live in harmony and thrive on opportunity,” Fougere said. “This new council affirmed the obvious statement that we have an incredible city with dynamic people moving forward all the time.”

The biggest topic for the morning was the Railyard Renewal Project, slated to move forward in 2017.

This is our next signature project for downtown. You are very much a part of that. I think this new Railyard Renewal Project is as big, or bigger, than the stadium itself,” Fougere said. “It is rare that we have a blank slate in our downtown to build something that reflects who we are as a city.”
Fougere said a hybrid design based on three preliminary designs shown to residents in May will be released in 2017.

“We had hundreds of residents give us their thoughts about what they see as a possibility for the Railyard Renewal Project,” Fougere said. “Our team is looking at secondary concept plans, what the zoning will look like.”

"sustainable community"?

Perhaps redoing our recycling program we would a good start. I pay 10 times what I paid in the US for it and that was for weekly service which actually included most items unlike our system which accepts very little. Frankly we'd be lucky to be in the top-twenty cities over 150,000 in Canada for sustainability.

I am an avid recycler but I fear a lot of Regina's program is window dressing (politics). The City does very little to advertise what should and should not go in blue bins. Emterra does absolutely zero to improve the quality of the stream, which leads one to suspect they do not care. I wonder how much Emterra ends up sending to the landfill? I look at the crap I see in blue bins and it really makes me wonder.

I have never understood why the City for political reasons insists they accept glass jars. None of it is recycled and the broken glass creates a big mess. It is a huge extra cost that we pay for. Glass is perfect for land fills as it is completely inert.

Agreed. I had better recycling in other cities I lived in almost two decades ago.

My biggest issue is how much we pay for how little. It is ridiculous.

In a lot of ways, we had a better program with the big bins on mall parking lots.
