Why? Brick and stone has never been the vernacular for Vancouver's residential real estate (unless you count the limestone on the latest horrendous Shanghai Specials). Shingle shakes have long been used as it is a material in abundance here.

more interesting than anything to do with the architecture/materials is the ultra rare insertion of commercial into an ultra lowrise residential neighborhood. these bare land use, single family home vancouver neighborhoods almost always limits neighborhood serving commercial uses to arterials, high streets or strip malls/shopping centers. allowing commercial into the neighborhoods themselves will do a lot to improve these areas in terms of livability, resource use and, down the line, redevelopment into a higher/market determined use.
What is "faux historic " anyways? Is the Vancouver courthouse faux historic. It is after all Neo-Classical. And Montreal's Notre-Dame Basilica is a Gothic Revival. Does that mean it's faux historic?

Pretty much. Almost every style since the renaissance has been some sort of revival in some way. I wouldn't say faux historic exists because history is what happens, and if we start building everything in a Gothic style again, it's what early 21st century architecture will be known by.
This is what all laneway homes should be. The ones being built right now are too small. They don't have a proper living room space. Not only is there more living space, but the added density would motivate people to build them at a faster rate than they're being built right now.
That's actually four laneway rental homes. It's possible to build larger projects in the West End because the lanes are wider than the rest of the city, and so a fire truck can use the lane. The lanes even have names these days - this one is Henshaw Lane.

Drove by on Monday and noticed that the provincial court house across the street was having all the climbing vines taken down from it's walls. Quite a shame.
