Any chance that the underground river system that they clearly disturbed can undermine the actual tunnel structure?

If what Meredith describes is accurate, there could be serious ground failures to follow. These hillsides are notoriously unstable, especially any slope where water is seeping out.

What surprises me is that The Straight didn't talk to any of the homeowners who are claiming damage to their properties - those people are perhaps under legal constraints not to talk to news media.

It seems possible that this wasn't caused by the tunnel itself, but rather by the water pumping and grout work that was done in an attempt to prevent more sinkholes. If that's the case, things will hopefully be returning to normal now.

So it seems that train testing through the tunnel will not be starting till at least fall of next year.

Evergreen Line opening delayed again, pushed back to early 2017
Amy Judd, Nov. 27 2015

The Evergreen Line opening has been delayed again. The line is now expected to be operational in early 2017.

This is the second delay for the opening of the line. It was first scheduled to be open in summer of 2016, but was pushed back to fall, 2016.

The tunnel boring for the Evergreen Line, which will connect Coquitlam, Port Moody and Burquitlam, is now complete and the Ministry of Transporation says train testing is expected to begin in the tunnel in the fall of 2016.

“Alice”, the name of the tunnel boring machine, drilled a single two-kilometre tunnel starting east of Barnet Highway in Port Moody to south of Kemsley Avenue in Coquitlam.

“Celebrating the completion of the tunnel boring work today is a great milestone for the project and for the communities this line will serve,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “The Evergreen Line project is more than 75% complete, and the work to finish the line, including the tunnel, is well underway. Once Evergreen is complete, B.C. will have the longest, fully automated rapid transit network in the world.”

Most of the stations for the new line are almost complete. There are seven stations along the project alignment: Lougheed Town Centre Station, Burquitlam Station, Moody Centre Station, Inlet Centre Station, Coquitlam Central Station, Lincoln Station, and Lafarge Lake-Douglas Station.

Cue the Translink hate.

The operational date was always going to be election day 2017.

Friend's video on my FB timeline (though it's not a public video) was showing Alice having officially punched through as of this morning! We're done, folks!

And here's the press release!
https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2015TRAN0165-001980

Apparently the opening date is now officially in 2017 as well (CBC News)

Well that sucks.. though on the bright side at least the most risky parts of the project are now completed (tunneling and raised segment construction) and we can be fairly confident that the project can keep to its schedule from now on therefore.

What can you say, tunneling is hard and full of unknowns which make it difficult to provide an exact schedule. You don't get the best right-of-way for nothing..

General public: "Stupid Translink. Why can't they [actually the Ministry of Transportation] follow a schedule?"

I have no doubt there will be some additional delays, probably of the weather if not political variety. Any time a tunnel is involved, the schedule would be in flux anyways, so it was never a sure thing the tunnel would be completed on time. The one thing not in play here is a political event (eg Olympics) that the infrastructure has to be complete for.

I imagine it being set to open just before the next BC provincial election, even if it's completed in March of 2017.

The financial penalties (assuming there are some) for this delay are not publicly known, are they?

Fresh hot ammo for the NDP to fire at the Liberals in the next provincial election.

They should be able to adhere to the new opening date - construction going forward can be fast forwarded by throwing additional resources at it. Frankly, they shouldn't have announced Fall 2016. They couldn't guaranty any date until today with the TBM breakthrough.

"I don't know" is not an option in politics. Better to suffer a bit of flak now for changing the date than to have gone through a year of haranguing for "not being able to manage a project".

Announce Fall of 2017 and you can come in on time and under budget... well except for the under budget part.

there is still a year to speed up some parts of the project, even though the tunnel completion is still the major bottleneck to the schedule.

It could open 'ahead of schedule' by xmas 2016.

just 400 more sleeps ....

Cost overruns? That's something SNC shareholders need to worry about.

Yes, delays do happen, but this is a perfect opportunity for the NDP to spin and connect together the perceived "incompetence" by the Liberals in choosing SNC Lavalin as the contractor, the PR snafus by TransLink in dealing with technical malfunctions and the referendum, and public anger towards the transit authority.
