No, you can't shape the world to reflect your personal sentiments. This type of reasoning is what creates endless headaches for anyone interested in doing anything, anywhere, at any time. Someone else is always affected. "My grandpa went there" isn't a reason for anything whatsoever, period.
Instead of preserving something that isn't remotely worthy of preserving on an exceptionally prime piece of real estate, why not work toward seeing that something grand is built there in its place? That way you get to honor your grandpa while encouraging the optimal use of precious land in central Austin. It's a win-win as far as I can tell. How long should schools be preserved to honor everyone's grandpa? Nothing would ever change in a world where we're all attached to the preservation of every building ever accessed by our ancestors.
