Should former Palm School site be sold to developers or preserved?

I say preserve it. My grandpa went there in the 1930s.

EDIT: This would be next to the proposed 32-story 6th & Nueces hotel.
Here's the consolidated administrative site plan. No building elevations, just some info about it, but on page 12 it does note that the proposed building is a 3-story building, but it also mentions that the max building height is 535 feet. Back before 360 was built, Novare had been planning a 35-story tower on this block along with a 40-story 550 foot tower on the post office site.

I remember when that whole hillside above the freeway was more or less a campground for crackheads. The police used to sweep through there and beat the bushes to get the drug addicts out of there. This is a definite improvement over the old downtown,

Isn't the Hilton Hotel-Convention Center skyway/sky bridge a bit further along in the process than this article suggests?

No, you can't shape the world to reflect your personal sentiments. This type of reasoning is what creates endless headaches for anyone interested in doing anything, anywhere, at any time. Someone else is always affected. "My grandpa went there" isn't a reason for anything whatsoever, period.

Instead of preserving something that isn't remotely worthy of preserving on an exceptionally prime piece of real estate, why not work toward seeing that something grand is built there in its place? That way you get to honor your grandpa while encouraging the optimal use of precious land in central Austin. It's a win-win as far as I can tell. How long should schools be preserved to honor everyone's grandpa? Nothing would ever change in a world where we're all attached to the preservation of every building ever accessed by our ancestors.

It was 2 different thoughts. I say preserve it as a historical site. As an aside, my grandpa went there.

I'm not so self-centered to say save something just because my grandpa was one of thousands to pass through those halls. I just place importance on history. They could repurpose it like the power plant.

Aha! Understood. I've never checked the place out up close and only know how it appears from the freeway and a couple of other brief views-in-passing. What's historic about it, and do you really think it's worth sacrificing the potential of that property in order to keep Palm School? I guess the big question I'm asking is if it's in a CVC, because if it is then I have no opinion, but if it is unrestricted then there better be a fairly dramatic reason for keeping it as is, like it needs to be Alamo level of historic value. [my opinions, while always expressed as if held passionately, are relatively easy to change --- see the Courthouse thread for evidence. ]

I have no vested interest in whether or not the school is preserved. But I believe in property rights and think the entity that owns it should be allowed to develop it as they see fit.

I guess I just like to have ties to the past remain in the present. A good mix is essential.

Did anyone else see a crew drilling for core samples at I-35 and Riverside yesterday? They were on the northwest corner of the intersection.

It's most likely for the I35/ Riverside overpass improvements that were posted on here a few months back.

re: above rendering.

Note the small house on the corner of the lot is still there in the rendering!

I love it! The elderly woman who lived there refused to sell years ago when that whole area was to be a Mall! LOL!

Oh the power of one determined old lady! Gotta love it!

They plan on using that house as the construction HQ during the construction. But I was surprised to see still standing in the rendering.
