It's a market. It's almost certainly going to be low rise. [Unless Snøhetta are also designing Melvin Mark's tower, but I haven't heard anything to suggest that they are.]

I would love it if they were, but that is highly unlikely.

The good news about James Beard Market is that, even if it is all stumpy buildings, it will lead to a lot of development in the area surrounding it. And hopefully that'll spill north toward the plethora of surface parking lots. I'd love to see a giant tower as part of this market... but if a successful market leads to developing on those nearby surface lots, it'll be a fantastic result for downtown, even if the market itself isn't particularly tall.

I really hope this one hasn't stalled!

The market site will most definitely be low rise, but the tower site was proposed as a 17 story building BEFORE the allowable height increase. So a taller tower is a distinct possibility and may help the project pencil out financially. But even if it doesn't grow in height, the tower can still be iconic and provide an appropriate backdrop to what is likely to be a very well designed and highly visible Snohetta marketplace. I would imagine the Snohetta team, even if they aren't the architects of record for the tower, will still have an extremely powerful say in the design of it.

Funny, I just assumed that Snohetta was designing the whole thing, tower included. Why would they not design the tower portion of the project?

That would definitely be preferable, but so far, that hasn't been confirmed. I guess we'll know more once we see some preliminary designs.

Superstar Norwegian Architects Will Reveal the New James Beard Market This Week

Acclaimed firm Snohetta will preview its plans to transform a dour parking lot into locavore heaven.

The James Beard Public Market has been on the drawing board for the better part of two decades, envisioned as a year-round, indoor/outdoor marketplace for community gathering to rival Seattle’s Pike Place. This week, Portland finally gets of glimpse of what the place might look like, courtesy famed Norwegian design firm Snohetta.

As we've covered here before, Snohetta's portfolio includes the Oslo Opera House and the Great Library of Alexandria, and they are currently redesigning New York’s Times Square. The operation's noted expertise at transforming troubled sites will be needed at the Beard Market's current proposed site, a grim patch of asphalt at the west end of the Morrison Bridge (that's it, above).

This week, Snohetta will unveil its proposed design at a booked-solid public forum at OMSI. (It's June 25, 5 pm, and free, but currently accepting only waiting list sign-ups.) We'll cover the event, the design, and the evolving concept behind the Public Market, named in honor of the most legendary Portland-born foodie here. Get ready.

Mac,

So wrong. I feel like a kid at Christmas who has asked for a the same gift year after year - - - anticipating that this year I will get the gift I've wanted. Three days until Christmas.

Very exciting! Can't wait to see what they've come up with. But I'm somewhat expecting it to be something less flashy and more subtle. Also, I'm curious to see if they're also designing the tower, or if they're strictly concentrating on the Market.

I have high hopes for this site, but even more than that, I have high hopes for what this site will bring to under developed lots nearby. I hope for something stunning here, but even if it's not, I'll still be thrilled if it becomes a catalyst for more development nearby. Please please please, let them tear out nearby surface parking lots.

Yeah it would be so nice to have Naito become street you actually want to walk along. With the park and river right across the street it has potential, and just driving by the new Akrom headquarters under construction today made me excited to see this area come to life. It has a long way to go, but if they keep renovating the historic little buildings, and the time share project and JB market are successful, things could look up for our waterfront.

Well look at that. There is something here for the size queens.

Snøhetta Unveils a Bold Vision for the James Beard Public Market

The Norwegian firm envisions a development that would transform Portland's food scene—and cityscape.

Where some people see a series of parking lots and bridge ramps stretching the length of more than two football fields, Craig Dykers of the Oslo-based architecture firm Snohetta sees the “potential of beautiful shapes.” Unveiling the first concept sketches for the James Beard Public Market on Wednesday, Dykers conceded the proposed site beneath the Morrison Bridge was “counterintuitive.” But he offered up a vision of a food paradise of “medieval streets” lined with small eateries and food stalls beneath 30-foot-high spaces vaulted by steel trusses echoing the bridge’s structure. A “wing-like” roof would rise at each end while swooping beneath the bridge.

Oh, and atop the market, two towers, 20 stories high, rising “like sails” on each side of the bridge.
...continues at Portland Monthly.
