You misread.

But by saving on everyday goods, consumers are able to dedicate the savings to splurging on other high end retail in the area.

Sorry, I was confused by the horrible grammar.

Two main points to this:

1. Walmart is as bottom end as it gets for a retailer.

2. If they open at Brentwood, they will be very busy.

I'm no fan of Walmart but I'd rather have a Walmart in there than no grocery store at all. Some of these comments are awfully worrying though.

There's nothing wrong with Wal-Mart - it's not even the cheapest place for groceries.
Real Canadian Superstore and No Frills are often cheaper for groceries

It falls into the same general category as Zellers, Woolco, K-Mart and other "junior" department stores (as they were once known) of yesteryear.

You'd buy staples there - drug store items, household items, hardware, automotive items, but not necessarily clothing.

A Wal-Mart would drive a lot of traffic into Brentwood, esp. from Vancouver with SkyTrain access just past Boundary (versus all the way to Lougheed or Guildford).

If Sears remains, Wal-Mart and Sears are pretty compatible anchors. If Winners relocates from Madison Centre (maybe it can become a Marshalls and a Winners/Homesense could open at Brentwood) at the west end of Brentwood mall, it would be a good set of anchors for the mall.

To the people in the immediate area, certainly. More choice is always a good thing. Save on Foods can be pretty friggin expensive.

It wouldn't be "another" Wal-Mart - it would be an expanded and improved replacement Wal-Mart -
i.e. Like the Willingdon Costco is a bigger, better Costco than the former Grandview location (currently occupied by Wal-Mart).
The Grandview Wal-Mart is substandard for a Wal-Mart SuperCentre and only exists as a toehold within the City of Vancouver.

The Grandview Wal-Mart is terrible and does not feel like a permanent location at all. It's pretty clear to me that there are no plans to stay there for a long time and I think Brentwood would be a good fit.

Assuming Walmart super center indeed will relocate to the former Zellers/Target site in Brentwood, and Shape has been proposing all along that there is going to be a grocery store somewhere in the phase III area. Then there will actually be 2 grocery stores right on sight. One on the south east corner, and Walmart on the north west corner. That would really make Brentwood super convenient. I hope this is true.

For such a tall building like this one, will it have garbage chutes? Went to a friend's high-rise condo months ago, and i thought it was really really convenient.

I don't know of any newer towers with garbage chutes - there's the issue with garbage such as pizza boxes getting stuck in them - plus with all the requirements for separating recyclables, compost and garbage, it seems like a recipe for bylaw violations (and the strata incurring fines from its garbage contractors).

totally agree. People tends to abuse such convenience by throwing stuffs not properly wrapped, and it makes chute filthy. Or if chute is jammed, people simply leave all kinds of garbage around the chute area. Unsightly, unhygienic not to mention the increase traffic to the units close by.

No, the building is less than 10 years old. It's near Richmond Centre. I just thought it was really convenient and another benefit is residents don't really need to bump into another resident holding trash in the elevator. Especially for a building that is 63-storey high. I imagine that the elevators can get really stinky.

Most building don't have them for the reasons mentioned. A chute can also become smelly - and it's on your residential floor.

The smelly-ness of trash in an elevator really depends on what's being thrown out - perhaps more of a concern in Richmond? (and probably not a lot of pizza boxes in Richmond)

It must be a building code issue. I thought all cities had done away with them decades ago. I lived in a highrise in the west end in the mid-eighties that had a garbage chute but it had been permanently bolted closed years earlier due (I heard) to city regulations. Guess Richmond is different. Besides the obvious issues of fire and blockages, can you imagine the noise of things being thrown down 52 stories (not 63 btw) of a metal shaft? Yikes!

Hotels have big chutes. Even new ones such as trump. So I don't know how they ban them and say it's a fire issue but allow them in hotels

I'm pretty sure there are no garbage chutes in this building but I can double check when I'm at work tomorrow

I do know that River Green in Richmond and 3 Harbour Green in Coal harbour have garbage chutes, and those buildings are only a few years old.
