The guy on the left must be the finance guy... it looks like he's saying, "I was thinking something more like this tall"

I imagine then the conversation goes something like:

"Well, we I guess we could go 400 ft tall."

"That sounds great! Not sure why, but 400ft just strikes me as the perfect number."

Maybe it's just me, but the first "box" of residential units above the podium looks odd. Look below the guy on the right's hand. Part of the facade looks different and it appears to be at a slant.

It could still look good depending on what they do with it. I would love to see an outline of a purple neon crown on all four sides based on the crown they use in some of their emblems.

You can definitely tell that the sections are offset, as in the second rendering in LoneStarMike's post. I agree that the lower portion looks to be at a slant. I wonder if it's just the angle playing tricks on us or if it is intentionally done that way. I really hope there's a crown of some sort...the mechanical box at the top only would be kinda lame for such a tall tower relative to others in that area. The model looks kinda like a skeleton of the structure, so hopefully it's still a part of the design and just not included here.

Hookem, you joke about them cutting it at 400 ft....I sure hope they don't read your comment and think that's a good idea, haha.

The guy on the left is Brett Rhode, the architect.

This is a great idea. My guess is that the mechanical cube will have at least some light component. Since the building is still being advertised as the tallest residential structure west of the Mississippi, I assume the crown portion isn't included in this model, because without it the building wouldn't surpass the Austonian.

I too, counted 50 floors on this model. Are we sure that's a podium. It looks like a car on top of it. I will say that this model is not as interesting and unique as their massing model...imo. Additionally, I do not like the exposed mechanical penthouse. I hope it turns out better (closer to the look of their initial massing model).

Another thing...on the Independent's website, there are several examples of floor plans. Each and every one of them with recessed balconies. The model above, shows external balconies (a totally different look and design).

I think it's the podium, although the one in the massing model is twice as long.

As drummer pointed out, it's probably just the skeleton of the building without the exterior finishes.

They had a similar model of the revised 7 Rio that looks nothing like the finished product.

I was thinking the same. A tiny little box would really be a lame way to top-off the Austin skyline.

I love it. It looks a lot like the massing model. It's a point tower, rather than a massive wall, and best of all, it's not beige.

The only thing I don't like about the rendering is that it's got that "washed out" look, so you know me - I just had to darken it a little.

I think the financing issue is waiting on reservation numbers once they start in May/June. I bet reservations do very well and financing will not be an issue.

I hope I learn to like this like all of you, but I just don't get the offsets. It looks like a poorly done photo shop job. Its certainly different and I want to like it but....I'm also not a fan of the balcony offsets on the W either. They both look discombobulated to me, especially the Independant. Ya'll can disagree with me, but please remember, its just my opinion. Maybe when its completed, the whole scope and height of this thing will help me to like it.
