It's not an obvious place to short-turn trains, is it?
I suppose it's the first WCE stop coming from the west, but the pocket track is west of the Port Moody Station - so it would be more useful for the short-turning of trains coming fom the east
(i.e. future Port Coquitlam trains? - but why wouldn't you short-turn those at Coquitlam Central, which also has WCE?)

They may have also decided to build it at that location because it's a centre platform and could easily fit between the guideways.
Pocket track, because its the first station east of the tunnel?

Single-tracking shuttle through the tunnel between Burquitlam and here;
then change trains here to connect with eastern stations?

I guess it could be a place to tow or store a disabled train that central to the line(?)

Has anyone ever seen a "disabled train" being towed (better yet have video or photos of it being towed)?

Again, thanks for all of the updates everyone!

I can't wait to see it next time I am in Vancouver.

I have no doubt that this is a photographic anomaly due to the way the multiple photos are stitched together. We've seen 747s with two sets of wings, etc too.

The biggest giveaway about that image is how close together the train sets are. I'm not sure what the minimum distance is between train sets, but it's way more than is shown above.

I want to believe. I'm really optimistic it's a phographical error. There is nothing else that implies it was stitched precisely over the train.

Loiter around a station at the end of the peak hours and you will have out of service trains waiting less than half a sets length behind and will continue to hang pretty close until the front train speeds away.

Someone just ask TransLink what they do when half a train breaks down. This is getting on par with a UFO sighting, and off-topic.

The photo is clearly stitched, take a look at the white car with the sunroof driving eastbound along Vanness it's just behind the mysterious 3car train and then again 150M eastbound where just behind the 4 car trains.

Additionally, there would be partisan political points for the current provincial government to diminish or eliminate "Millennium Line."

But of course Translink has done ridiculous things in the past...
Both the NDP and Liberals seem to be hell bent on making sure Translink doesn't succeed.

Some of my thoughts on the naming of the older stations:

1) If future Millennium Line trains will be running on that section, then, yes, leave the name.

2) IF the Millennium Line will not run on the line, then, yes, rename it all.

3) Going with route numbers would be easier to understand for tourists.

Was having lunch at the White Spot today at Lougheed, and was able to sneak a few looks at the construction...all the forms are removed on the girders, it's free standing now, no temporary bents straddling Lougheed, and the girder crane coming south to meet up...looks really good, and the split guideway gives it an architectural feel, even if un-intentional. Some rail clips on the bump section of the new guideway, looking from the platform, and seeing the new guideway curve out to the Evergreen portion, looking real good...

Tunnel news

Some workers at the tunnel mud pit give me the following update.
So far only about 250m have been bored. The machine encountered solid rock a few weeks ago which resulted in changes to the cutter head.
It is expected that the worst is behind and good progress will be made starting in a few days.

I would prefer route numbers to names, but I'm in the minority on that one

Thanks for the update -

I guess that's what they call - "tunnelling risk" (transferred to the contactor, no doubt)

It looks like the Evergreen Line name will stick.

Quote:
METRO VANCOUVER -- The Evergreen Line will keep its name when the SkyTrain extension opens in 2016, despite concerns from TransLink that it could cause confusion among passengers transferring from the Millennium Line in Burnaby to the Port Moody-Coquitlam route.

TransLink’s Jeff Deby said the transportation authority has decided to let the Evergreen name stick, mainly because it has become a brand and identity for the new route.

Residents also have a strong attachment to the name, which was chosen in a public competition, he added, unlike the Expo and Millennium lines, which were named for a specific time or place. The Canada Line had been dubbed the RAV line during planning before it was officially changed ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

“Evergreen will be part of the identity of the line. It’s been in people’s minds,” said Deby, a senior “wayfinding” expert who develops strategies to help people navigate the transit system. “We have heard there’s a lot of attachment to the Evergreen Line and we don’t want to back away from it.”

Meanwhile, I drove on North Road today, and there's only seven segments to go until guideway construction meets up with the steel girders on Gatineau.
