Yes.. Just a little guy. 3.0 epicenter on the Utah Nevada border. I didn't feel it in Lehi, but yeah, it happened.

In addition to the little guy on the Utah nevada border, there was a 3.2 in Tooele. That's the one you felt.

I felt it too. Was more of a shock than the 5. something around Morgan a few years ago.

On another note. I also work near the Salt Palace and Friday on my way to my car, I noticed that they had installed the temporary port-o-lets near the South entrance. Yes, I did some pictures mostly because I couldn't believe that there was a convention so big that the multitude of rest room facilities within the Salt Palace couldn't facilitate the needs of the masses.

Hearing that volume had topped 100k is amazing and would justify SLC getting some more possible announcements and attention from most studios, both print and movie.

I do think that September's Comic Con will be possibly even bigger than this FanX. I do hope that there will still be room for local artists and contributors.

This statement isn't accurate. Census estimates still show these are two of the fastest growing cities in Utah. For example, the most recent available data shows Saratoga Springs increased in population from 19054 (2011) to 21137 (2012). Who knows what will happen in the future, but these cities are growing fast right now.

I ran a booth all three days at Comic Con. It was insanely packed inside. I wouldn't be surprised if more than 100K were there today after Captain Picard showed up. (I saw his scalp from 40 feet away. Gasp!)

It wasn't just busy on the streets around the SP, Main and State had a lot of foot traffic, too. I saw a couple DeadPools walking around Temple Square.

Once I get to a computer, I'll post some Capitol Theater pictures.

My statement was most definitely accurate. I said growth has slowed considerably in both communities, which is true. The census shows that Eagle Mountain grew from 2,157 to 21,415 people from 2000 to 2010 which averages out to very close to 2,000 people a year. The estimate for 2012 is 23,212, which is less than 2,000 people in 2 years. This not only suggests a huge decrease in percentage growth, but also a significant numerical decrease. In Saratoga Springs the slow doesn't seem as dramatic. It has posted similar numerical growth the past two years as it did the years before, but that still suggests a significant decrease in growth rate.

So maybe they're growing faster than most Utah cities, but that doesn't change the fact that their growth has slowed significantly. I'd give Saratoga Springs a chance. I say it could break the top 15, maybe the top 10 largest cities in Utah by 2050. Eagle Mountain, on the other hand, I have no faith in. I don't believe in its growth, think the place is a hole, don't see its appeal, and never want to go back there for as long as I live.

But like was said before, projections to 2050 is purely speculation. I really don't know why they even do them that far into the future.

Today's KSL article

Link:

http://www.ksl.com/?sid=29563532&nid=148...n-to-nearly-double-by-2050&s_cid=queue-6

What disturbs me about this article is the idea that in order to accommodate the growth, the author immediately suggests that growth can only occur on the periphery of urban centers. This is nonsense, and I am afraid it is ingrained in the development community. Did the Envision Utah idea just sputter and stop, or is Utah really serious about quality urban planning?

Just out of curiosity what booth were you running?

There were 1 or 2 really random booths.. I remember seeing one for asphalt shingle roofing and thinking.. What??

We are going to be holding a seminar this Thursday to discuss the recent deactivation of the neon lights on the Shilo Inn. We will be discussing both the positive and negative impacts that the change has had on locals, visitors, and on general downtown commerce.

The seminar will run from 10 AM to 5 PM and will be held at the Shilo Inn. Pleas bring all thoughts printed on paper so that they can be submitted for review.

I'd say that's a pretty pervasive problem in journalism, and the consequence is that no one really explains to the public why/how there can be better types of development.

Having worked in journalism, I'd say most journalists who write about cities and development — and who don't work for specialty publications like The Atlantic Cities — have absolutely no idea what they're doing. I think that applies to pretty much all the writers/reporters I read here in Utah, unfortunately.

I agree goldcntry, I like it. The only minor addition I would have made are some carved reliefs on the exterior of those balconies at the third and forth levels. Nothing too elaborate, just a little something interesting, instead of a blank slate.

Yeah, I was there all three days too, manning the LEGO display.

Nerd hangover. Still.

And really, it was packed--even with the entire Salt Palace to roam in, it still got crazy by Saturday.

I was wondering the same thing--was asking a friend who worked for a health insurance company who was running a booth. He said that a lot of the non-geek companies there were there because they like to get their message out to young professionals with money...which is what a lot of those geeks are.

Looks like we're already breaking in the new courthouse

Shooting reported at new Salt Lake City federal courthouse

Salt Lake City police responded Monday morning to a report of a shooting at the new federal courthouse at 400 South and West Temple.

A defendant was reportedly shot by a U.S. Marshal when the defendant tried to stab a witness with a pen, according to Portia Louder, who was in the courthouse and was told those details by a marshal...
