While walking through City Creek Center this morning 9ish I saw a press conference on the skybridge but couldn't get close enough to hear. Now sounds like it is news this forum will like... Speaker of the House Becky Lockhart endorsing a bill to support a convention hotel.
That's great news about the Hotel. I think this time we'll see the vote go the right direction. Now, if we can just get a Hotel more along the line of L.A's.
As soon as I get back to a computer, I'll add 145 in the skyline shots. Sorry I haven't been able to get to it, I've been busy with other projects. Just to make sure, the recent renderings of 145 show it as roughly 290ft. tall, correct?
I'm really liking this new rendering of the Air Center. The detailing gives us a more accurate idea, also makes the anticipation more exciting. The Air Center reminds me somewhat of a popular entertainment center here in Downtown L.A., across from the Convention Center. Ken spoke of getting some of his ideas from Los Angeles. To his credit, Salt Lake's project will be a more glam and attractive version.

Speaking of a convention hotel. Here is San Antonio's Grand Hyatt convention center hotel that was built in 2008. It's connected to the their convention center. This is definitely "megahotel" worthy. It's almost the exact same height as the Wells Fargo Center here in Salt Lake...it's actually just a little taller than the Wells Fargo Center.
I think something like this would look good in Salt Lake.
That looks like something that would've been built in Las Vegas in the late 1980s... I'd like to see a much slimmer building that's 40 to 50 stories high.

That would not work well in the context of our skyline. I'm not a fan of the style...but the sheer proportions would make it look like a mammoth compared to the rest of the structures.
What absolutely fantastic news, that one opponent from last year is now backing the CCH proposal. For any newbies reading this, we tend to use a lot of abbreviations, CCH = Convention Center Hotel.
I would estimate that one or two rural law makers will switch sides with Mayor McAdams including the overall State tourism component in the deal. I still don't see how Sinclair and other Hotel owners continue to have their heads in the sand on the fact that this will bring them more business. So maybe it takes 5-10% of their business away from existing conventions, but if we can attract even 5 more conventions that bring in 3,000 - 5,000 people each that will easily make up for the loss. The thing they don't realize is if the Salt Palace doesn't have more convention space eventually OR is going to choose a different city, not because they want to, but because they'll have to. That is a much bigger loss of nights stayed than the convention hotel itself will be, (if no new conventions were booked).
As has been stated many times and as the article points out, the funding mechanism, Tax Increment Financing, is to only pay for the convention space, which will be part of the Salt Palace convention space. To me this drastically narrows down the potential sites where the CCH could be, because if it is to be part of the Salt Palace it seems logical that it needs to be connected to the Salt Palace. For instance the Convention Space at the Downtown Marriott isn't counted as part of the overall square footage of the Salt Palace, even though it is directly across the street, because it isn't connected. So based on the current layout of the Salt Palace, and how the main entrances are set up, the most logical location for a connection that doesn't interrupt the flow of those entrances is the Royal Wood Plaza/Post Office location.
There are many that disagree with that point and I'd be more than happy to discuss it, but if you do propose another site, please include how it will connect to the Salt Palace in logical flow.
As for the design of the CCH I'm in the camp that would hate to see something like the San Antonio CCH. That things is ugly. Would I like to see a new tallest for the CCH? Yes, but I'd be happy with a multiply tower structure, even if each tower were only in the 20-25 story range. Maybe a stepped design, such as a tall portion around 30-35 stories on the corner with a step down 5-10 stories as it goes west and north, (if on the RWP site) maybe even a second step down of 5-10 stories. Or another option could be the two 25 story towers, maybe one on the corner and one mid block, if they put in a N/S mid-block road, or two towers facing 200 S. But the giant wall I am totally against.
I do know that a location hasn't been finalized for the CCH. I do however agree with FM that RWP is the best location for continuous floor plan expansion.
So if a CCH is approved, what is the deciding factor that determines if it is a JW Marriott, Hilton, Grand Hyatt, Westin, etc.?
I really like the design and look of this CCH in San Diego. Something similar would look good in SLC.
And, yes I think the current location of the Royal Wood Office Plaza is the perfect spot for the CCH.

I don''t really see it either. In fact, a 670 footer far from the rest of the skyline would probably look silly. I'd rather have a gradual increase in height for buildings. I think we need a 500 ft building before a 600 ft building. But something resembling Austin's tower would be nice. i also like the Seattle building from Plaid Shirts.

Welcome to the forum. That site you're talking about used to be a greyhound bus station before the HUD opened. During the development of CCC that site become a staging area and as far as I know that fence has been up since. No development plans that I know of.

The reason I asked is partially because I was wondering if that site might be another possible candidate for the CCH, particularly if you could combine it with some of that surface parking to the north. It has the benefit of being along the TRAX line that runs out to the airport (great access for convention goers coming to town) and fronts the latest expansion to the convention center. My concern about using the RWP site for the CCH is that it fronts the loading dock area to the Salt Palace. In addition, it seems they generally prefer to shut down 200 West for the larger conventions like OR. Although, I'm sure those elements could be overcome with good design.
Regardless of the site, I hope we see the CCH obtain the financial support from the legislature to move forward sooner rather than later, it's an exciting project and one I can't wait to see come out of the ground.
