Yeah no peak pricing fares please. Unless you're going to change it from $3 to $20 all that is going to do is piss everyone off and change nothing. Anyone who can go to work off peak likely already is to avoid the crush.

The problem here is we have a road and rail system to downtown which is full, and we keep allowing more office towers to be built, so we either need to stop the permits (bad idea), start demolishing block after block of buildings to widen roads (bad idea) or get more rail capacity asap.

I am confused by what you mean by this. Can you explain?

If cars aren't in the spots by 7 or 7:30, the spots can't be used until lets say 9 am. Otherwise the extra spots you approve above policy just contribute to worse traffic.

'Stars have aligned:' City approves plan to build rapid bus routes to suburbs

By Jason Markusoff, Calgary Herald January 31, 2014 1:00 PM

The seven transit routes council approved Friday are:

- Southeast “Green line” transit-only roadway and lanes, along the future LRT corridor

- Centre Street “Green line” bus-only lanes, though future LRT may go up Edmonton Trail instead

- Southwest transitway from downtown to Mount Royal University, Rockyview General Hospital, Woodlands

- 17th Avenue S.E. transitway

- South crosstown BRT, in mixed traffic (Quarry Park to Heritage LRT to MRU to Westbrook)

- North crosstown BRT, in mixed traffic (University of Calgary down 16th Avenue to Rundlehorn Drive and Saddletowne LRT)

- Northwest “hub” to U of C, Foothills Hospital, Alberta Children’s Hospital, future West Campus neighbourhood

I like this plan overall and has the big idea, but if they are going to get serious about making CT a real choice other than the LRT, they have to give bus lanes to all these routes. The network resiliency you gain is worth it.

Take the recent Atlanta snow-storm as perfect, albeit extreme example. On given day traffic is terrible but largely works. When the system faces a capacity crunch during a snowstorm or accident, there is no alternative to take the capacity and the system breaks. By adding BRT to existing travel lanes, the overall road capacity increases slightly (due to passengers on the bus, assuming some are attracted to take it), but not enough to compensate for shocks like accidents and snow. So you'll have 100 people sitting on a bus in mixed traffic going no where. A separated lane would be vastly more attractive, reliable and useful for resiliency.

Mixed traffic buses will exist in some places, but a road like 16th? Give the lane up, its plenty wide enough anyways. Just have mixed lanes for turning right (not perfect but a necessary evil).

I was excited to see what was approved today until I noticed it said "10-year plan". This type of stuff is needed now, not 10 years from now.

That map just made me depressed. So the city is going to fuck the dog and building the 203 as a bus line... that is complete bullshit.

transitway for the 203, convertable to LRT, just has been being discussed the last while.

Also, council is studying ways to raise find to build the LRT.

I wouldn't worry. Trust in the Great Material Continuum. This is just a step in the process.

Interesting thing about that map is that the dark gray coloured core area extends to Stampede Park. Are they considering increasing the free-fare zone or what? I hope not, as they need more revenue, not less, but on the other hand, I'm sure there are a few free-loaders who will have a different view.

Thoughts?

If funding could be found, is there a reasonable chance Council decides to just go all out on the LRT rather than do this?

Gray area just represents Centre City. No intention to extend the free fare zone I believe.

They should build the SE as a busway, and at the same time work on north central as an LRT. By the time the LRT is done to downtown, they can then evaluate if it is worth converting the SE BRT or not. Currently adding a busway to the NC isn't going to change a whole lot. Its already a steady bus stream.

I'm not a fan of the emphasis on high op-cost buses. They should direct this funding strictly towards LRT.

I'm not sure why, if Ontario's cities can so easily secure federal funding for their transit projects (Kitchener's ION LRT is being funded 100% by provincial and federal I believe), why can't we ask for appropriate funding? Being the 4th largest city in the country, with the economy to definitely be able to pay back the loans, I don't know why it's such an issue to find funding.

The buses are needed because you need to deal with the mid-term.

Your ideal is like saying to a person who just got their first job, don't rent anything, just save for your first down payment. Well, where the heck is the dude supposed to live in the mean time?

For the additional cost of LRT, instead of four transitways, two BRTs and a who-knows-what, we would be able to build a nowhere-to-nowhere segment of one of these lines -- the one with such low demand it is currently serviced by community shuttles.

Operation cost savings are only a benefit once your frequency is due to demand, which is really only on Centre Street. Especially since they're planning 30 minute headways on these routes.

Really not sure, I actually checked Ontario and Alberta revenue per person and Alberta brings in about $800 more per person, so I guess that throws out the argument of 'well other provinces have a sales tax'
