Denver RTD runs in a single spine with multiple points that diverge off the spine. In the downtown area trains are with destined for union station or the circle terminus called 18th and California. At the south end trains either run to cherry creek, Lincoln, or Littleton. Only the newest west line does not conform to the central spine concept, however trains only travel from golden to union station.

Denver RTD is and interlink proponents dream, however this is accomplished by interlining at the end points rather than at central hub like the Calgary concepts.

Well that isn't exactly true, although I agree with the underlying premise. You can pretty consistenly find that the perceived (or subjective) value of time is higher (more burdensome) per minute of transfer waiting time as opposed to initial waiting time. There is a reason people are rather transfer averse.

More intuitively, this is likely because you can generally plan around the first leg of a trip and schedule - to minimize waiting time. There is less anxiety involved as presumably you are still closer to home and therefore other potential mobility options (or ones a user would be more aware of) and general familiarity if things go wrong. You're also dependent on two modes/legs of a mode being reliable as opposed to one. Finally, the transfer itself is often weighted heavily even when accounting for the waiting (and perhaps some walking time) merely because it is perceived as an inconvenience:

It's quite likely even given high reliability that a user would choose a 35 min direct trip as opposed to one that is 30 mins where a change is necessary.

This of course depends on just how reliable your system is. Switzerland or Japan might instill the kind of faith needed to make what you say come to be, but we're a long way off from that. But yeah, there still is no real benefit in doing what was pondered in the initial post.

Nice picture. Makes you wonder what could have been if they hadn't ripped out the trams. We wouldn't be debating on how Centre St should be handled for one.

Encouraging news .. It'll be interesting to see if this gains any momentum with other councillors

If this included the NC I would support it 100%, as only the SE I wouldn't vote for it and in fact I would fight it.

G&M Article on Denver - Calgary should listen, you can't put a single project on a ballot like this, you need to have a broad support base across the city. Sure SE Calgary would vote nearly 100% yes, but the rest of the city could fairly easily be motivated into no votes.

You bundle the Green Line, the Stephen Avenue subway, and a few park and ride structures on the existing lines together and might just have a working coalition. A group to lead the funding and messaging of the campaign from outside would be good too, like the Denver example or the Board of Trade in Toronto.

Exactly; it doesn't make any sense for a project that only benefits the SE to be put on a city-wide referendum. If only there was some set of projects that benefited all parts of the city...

Particularly if there was more of a transitway focus instead of the nebulous "BRT".

Plus, the crosstown bus improvements. AHS staff benefit most from this (Rockyview, Foothills, ACH all will get rapid bus improvements), so don't rule out nurses unions who want to cut back parking costs or long transit trips to work.

I sign up to vote and fight for that!

OK, I'm starting to understand the complaints about our LRT system being overloaded. I've been leaving downtown right in the peak of the rush lately, and it's horrible. I'm not talking "I can never get a seat" kinda whiny, I'm talking absolute sardine cans. And not just when something happens, this is normal course of business. Waiting for 2-3 trains to go by is becoming common.

And once again this morning, we have a "CPS incident" which put the entire system in chaos. I don't understand how anyone past Crowfoot even got into downtown this morning, every single train was leaving jam-packed. If you're not willing to stand outside in the -20 windchill for 10 minutes, good luck ever getting on.

It feels like more and more we're seeing large delays and service disruptions in the system. Before, they were a nuisance but we had the capacity to mitigate it somewhat. Calgary's finally outgrowing the Ctrain Here's hoping the 4 cars come online very, very soon - and even that is just a stopgap.

4:30ish?

I am a transit freeloader, as I only use the free-fare zone downtown. I don't see myself as a burden on the system though, because those poor suckers at 7th street in the afternoon sure are glad as hell a bunch of us Beltliners and West-enders get off at that stop, otherwise they wouldn't get on. The funny thing is if you take a West train, it seems about 25% of riders get off at Kerby station.

The crowding we get is probably only experienced by a handful of cities in North America (NYC, YYZ, YVR, CHI, BOS and maybe BART).

The crowding has been around for quite some time. I started commuting by CTrain at the ripe old age of 11. And the trains were all full then. Although this was before the SD160 purchase, so I assume the headways have been steadily shrinking since then.

Pretty close. You can almost always get a spot, but it gets pretty full towards 8-9.
