I hope they widen the sidewalks too. It's amazing seeing these tall buildings in their "downtown" with suburban sidewalks beside the roads (1 meter wide with grass in between).

I personally find Hamilton frustrating because the urban fabric is such a disappointing mix of half-measures and 1970s-style urban renewal. On one side of the street you swoon:

Duke Street: nice

And on the other you, well...you just don't:

Duke Street: blech

This dichotomy typifies just about every street in Hamilton: one-side-awesome versus the-other-side-crap. It bugs the hell out of me. The only real exception to the rule is James Street North, which is turning into a mini-Queen West.

Don't visit any city out West, then.

Have you been to Ottawa? The have that sort of stuff even stronger.

Also I'm pretty sure Toronto has a decent amount, although when they renovate a neighbourhood it seems more thorough than Hamilton.

Thanks man. I love EAP too, it will look great once the West Tower is occupied with the random office lights all lit at night. The reflective glass is one of the best in Canada, the way it changes colour with the weather conditions.

That's a metro of only 1.3 million. Wtf man, that's such an intensely built downtown. How busy are the streets during the week? They look very quiet in the vid but obviously that's a Sunday.

Sunday is the quietest day of the week. The CORE Shopping Centre is open week-round, but it almost may aswell be closed on Sundays at this point. With the large influx of population into the core over the next 5 years, that will shift, thankfully. It's quite busy during the week. We have something like 150 000 people working in the CBD and 13 000 living there (Commercial Core, East Village, West End), but during the colder months of winter, more than half of the people travel between buildings using the +15 network, rather than sidewalks. So that limits street activity for about 1/4 - 1/3 of the year.

In the summer on a week day Calgary's core is ridiculously busy, and this is very much exaggerated by the narrow sidewalks. As soon as it hits 6PM the core is fairly quiet though (aside from the Stephen Ave and Eau Claire areas), but it is getting better every year.
