I'd love to see some photos of the other side of Main pre-City Hall. There were some beauties back in that block that fell to the wrecking ball.

Thanks for the Cdn Tire info. It's quite a beautiful building, really, but who would ever know blasting along at 65 km/h. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say it's Egyptian Revival. Not many like that around.

CaptainKirk, can you give any details of what we're seeing (post #405)? I can see it's a harbour view but would love to know more. Thanks.

Thanks for the info (re. pic in post #405). I love the high-contrast feel in the image. Wondering what the building is, to the left of the bldg under construction...the one whose rear faces that circular thing (a fountain?). Any idea in what year this photo was taken?

Above and below are photographs taken by Bruce Murdoch for the Spectator. The photographs were carried in the January 2, 1954 edition of that newspaper with the following caption:

“Another activity along the waterfront this year is the building of the Harbour Commission’s handsome new building, now being rushed to completion. Designed by the firm of Murton and Evans, architects, the building, when completed will be one of the best in the city. It is being erected, the commissioners point out, to provide facilities for the increased shipping and industrial expansion of the Port of Hamilton.” Hamilton Spectator, January 2, 1954

Wow! It's been years since I last saw that drawing. It's quite a nice building, though not readily identifiable as a farmer's market. In fact, I recall thinking at the time that it looked like a tarted up parking garage which is exactly what we ended up getting anyway.
