Maybe the LDS Church will start developing those large parking blocks in the near future. Thinking back on the large amount of surface parking that use to surround Temple Square and the quality of development that replaced the lots, I'm encouraged by what will probably be a very high level of quality architecture. I don't know how many of you have noticed the LDS Temple's design up in Meridian, but IMO it is stunning. If I could choose that somewhat ancient/deco influenced style for some of the future LDS, Secular or Government structures for Downtown SLC I would.

Development- and especially the development of SLC's skyline is not going as fast as I'd like. I see other similar cities developing at more rapid rates, and I get jealous.

The encouraging thing, is that I agree that SLC is headed in the right direction. For a long time downtown Salt Lake was dying and no one wanted to touch it with a 100 foot poll. The 'burbs like Sandy were aggressive in luring away business and the southwest valley was luring away residents.
SLC has had a long, hard battle to turn the tide of sprawl.

Downtown is showing signs of growth. CCC, 222, 111, and the UPAC are all great additions. Goldman Sach's decision to expand is awesome. More apartments and condos are coming online all the time which expands the 24/7 population. The 24/7 population will need goods and services to support them which means stores, restaurants, and entertainment. This growth will hopefully lead to a skyline and development that is worthy of a great city.

Nothing pisses me off more than parking lots that take up entire SLC blocks. What a waste of space for a downtown of a major US city. I'd love for the skyline to spread East and South. It really irritates me when I drive up to downtown and all I see are parking lots that are bearly filled up, and suddenly BAM Highrises. I swear, if those lots stay for another 10 years, I'll quit everything I'm doing and work to put buildings there.

But I do love Salt Lake's skyline. It's one of the best in the nation. Seen from North I-15, I love the line up of skyscrapers on South Temple with the COB and Capitol building to the north, and the Walker Center, One Utah Center, and Wells Fargo to the south. And of coarse, the mountains in the back.

Utah Population Growth

Hey guys, sorry I haven`t been on in a while. Just in case you missed it, the Census bureau just released last year's population state data through July 2013. Utah just passed Kansas and now claims 33rd place in population rank. At 2,900,872, Utah has now grown 4.96% since the 2010 census, outpacing all but 2 states (Texas: 5.18% and North Dakota: 7.55%).

At the rate we are growing, we should overtake Arkansas in the next year or two, followed by Mississippi in the next 2-3 years, and Iowa in about 5 years. We are growing 300-400% faster than any of those states, allowing us to claim 30th most populous state in the next half decade. Utah is quickly becoming a middle-populous state from a lower-populous one. Together with a strong job market, this will prove to be a great boon to our economy and hopefully spur further development - maybe even lift SLC`s skyline higher

Cool, thanks for the updates on that Eco. The skyline isn't growing taller as fast as we'd like, but at this pace of population growth, and as fast as they're announcing new mid-rise housing around the CBD, the height is bound to go up sooner than later.

Those hotels are going to have great views of the skyline. By the looks of things it looks like both Hotels are now being built.
What's the latest on the state street development?

The Hotel development on that block means good riddance to those ugly power lines, right?

Currently, only the first hotel is being built. That is the one on the corner of 3rd West and 1st South.

Sadly, it doesn't look like the power lines are coming down with this development. It is kind of funny too as they really only are there from 2nd West through 4th West along 1st South. Also, I wouldn't expect that they will be removed until the Salt Palace is expanded across 1st South.

You must be kidding. I can't imagine those rickety old power poles and lines remaining, at least along the property of the new Hyatt itself.

So driving into work today...Getting off on the 600 S. I-15 exit, driving into downtown, I was trying to imagine the new 111 Tower in the Skyline. Then I realized that our Towers are perfect in height because you can still see the beautiful mountains North East of them. I know its lame but the thought that Taller buildings might block the view of those was sad. Not enough to be apposed to taller buildings. Just never realized what a great view that exit provides.

Yeah, a lot of people don't realize how pretty those mountains are behind the Capitol once you move back a ways.

I agree. Our buildings fit in nicely from this point of view:

The developers of the Marriot Courtyard being built adjacent to the Hyatt have recently applied for a building permit. So actual construction is still probably a few months out. From what I've heard, you can expect to see those old power poles for a long time. The developers don't want to pay the money to bury them and Rocky Mountain Power will not foot the bill.

One interesting piece of information, a developer has finally been able to acquire all of the properties on the NW corner of 400 East and 400 South, also known as the Neff Floral corner. I haven't seen any elevations but at least it's all under one ownership.
