IGF is so . . . perfect, at least the interior.
If Calgary can take it up a notch I'll be thrilled. Anxious to see if anything comes to pass in 2014.

IGF is very nice and it is my favorite CFL stadium. However, it is surprising when you consider how cash-strapped Winnipeg is, that they wasted $40 million on that roof. Its not like Winnipeg gets a lot of rain through the summer and fall. What was the thinking behind the roof? Any Peggers have any thoughts on whether or not it is needed?

Would love to see a "stadium district" proposal for Calgary in the West Village It would be so visible and beautiful I bet

Yup, heard this as well from reliable sources. As a stadium/arena/entertainment district actually. Hardly wait!

If money wasn't an issue, I would build a new CFL stadium alongside an NHL arena in the West Village, replace McMahon with a 10-15,000 seat stadium for CIS/NASL, and replace the Saddledome with a 10-12,000 seat arena for WHL/Winter Olympics/Commonwealth/Pan Am Games and stampede events.

Re: New Stampeders Stadium
Post by @podcasterryan May 07, 2013

Went to a season ticket holder appreciation lunch for the Flames the other day and asked Ken King whether or not they were considering a football stadium as well as the new hockey arena when the development plan is unveiled.

He said while they won't say it is in the plans, he won't say it isnt either.

He also said that if unveiled at the lunch, the plans they have right now would have taken our breath away, calling it the most ambitious project in Calgary in the last 50 years.

Some background (old news)

Millions: Calgary to follow Edmonton’s suit?
Roger Millions Sportsnet.ca May 20, 2013

Now that it seems the City of Edmonton is finally going ahead with a much needed new multi-purpose arena that will eventually house the Oilers, what, if anything, will Calgary do to respond?

After all, playing second fiddle to the provincial capital never seems to go down that well.

If rumours have any substance, we may know very soon. Quietly, there is talk that some concepts will be revealed within the next two months. Yet, as wildly complex as the Edmonton scenario played out this one could be worse.

Calgary Flames Enterprises Ltd. not only owns the NHL team, but the CFL Stampeders, WHL Hitmen and NLL Roughnecks. It is the footballers that have added to the questions.

A study done recently indicated venerable McMahon Stadium has but a timeline of 10 years before massive renovation, or perhaps a brand new building.

Scotiabank Saddledome, while still very workable, has some deficiencies. Age is one of them, structure design that while unique, puts unwanted limitations on its usage. Most notable are a number of high-profile concerts that have been unable to play the Saddledome.

So, what does it all mean? It could mean the first Sports Complex in Canada with a new state-of-the-art home for the Flames and a newly constructed Stampeder facility — that of the ilk of Philadelphia or the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City.

If indeed there is truth to the idea, then it would seem likely any ties to the Calgary Stampede would be come to an end. Size of area needed would be compromised. Furthermore, in fan forums conducted by the Flames in the past, some comments have indicated there could be an appetite to separate from the Greatest Outdoor Show on earth.

Also, the city’s current Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, has indicated any new sports facilities of a professional calibre are not on the agenda. Certainly, at best not a priority.

Toss in a provincial government that has made one wonder where any dollars would come from and the political concerns grow.

So is this a pipe dream for Calgary, or perhaps a pipeline? As in Petroleum, or at least private funding from the offshoots of Alberta’s biggest revenue generators. No one is foolish enough to think, there would be that much appetite, from oil and gas or the private sector in general. Yet, if it could happen, Alberta’s private business would be one of the few jurisdictions that might make it happen — with help from their friends.

Regardless, the Flames and partners have done a masterful job of keeping plans quiet. One wonders if that is coming to an end. After all, finishing behind Edmonton in the standings is one thing. Placing second in the Wild Rose Province as the most progressive city is a whole different matter.

Flames watching Oilers arena situation
Eric Francis, Calgary Sun October 20, 2012

Oilers president Patrick LaForge uses the cycling term "drafting" to describe how closely the Flames have been following Edmonton's quest for a new arena.

It's an appropriate description given the Flames have, indeed, tracked the Oilers' path to try eliminating resistance while quietly drafting various plans of their own.

However, in light of the fact Edmonton's $475-million building plans made like Lance Armstrong and were quashed last week, one wonders what sort of implications it will have on Calgary's bid for new digs.

"It has no effect on us," assured Flames president Ken King.

He can say that because his organization has done a good job keeping its plans and timelines under wraps while watching to see how much money the federal, provincial and municipal governments might kick in.

However, given the feds and the province have made it clear they have no desire to prop up NHL buildings, the Flames have to find it somewhat troubling to hear Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi suggest his appetite to chip in for such a project is also lacking.

"For me, it is extremely difficult to justify spending very scarce public money on a professional sports arena," Nenshi said, when asked how closely he's been following Edmonton's sordid arena negotiations.

"Edmonton has a very, very different context, as they need a revitalization in their downtown, which we don't need as much. Before I was elected I told the Flames, 'if you want to have that conversation, I'm willing to have that conversation.' So far, they haven't brought me anything. I'm still waiting for some analysis and an idea of what it is they want. And I have to say even when they've talked to me informally, they've never asked for public money."

They will.

Clearly, now is not the right time given the failed negotiations in Edmonton, not to mention the bad taste billionaire owners and millionaire players have left in the mouths of Canadians with their labour war.

Given the changing attitude on funding pro sports buildings with public money, it only stands to reason whatever timeline the Flames had in mind to unveil their plans, it has surely been bumped back given the recent developments.

Many might be surprised to learn that, behind the scenes, King and his staff have been working closely with the Oilers on their respective arena projects. Even though Edmonton's project fell through Wednesday when owner Daryl Katz's absence at council meetings led to it being shelved, plenty has been learned.

King has said little about a Calgary arena for years and has asked only that, once it's unveiled, politicians and the public judge the project on its merits.

Rumours abound about possible locations, but the most likely areas are the Stampede grounds and nearby East Village. There has also been talk of a football/hockey complex at the University of Calgary.

One thing the Flames have going for them over the Oilers is the goodwill of its ownership.

"I think the ownership of the Flames are very decent, honourable people," said Nenshi, echoing the sentiment of Calgarians who recognize the work the ownership group has done for the community and local charities.

"They're not out to screw the public."

King says his club's goal is to build much more than a building, hinting at a significantly grander facility housing more than just an arena. If so, it will certainly give Nenshi more reasons to consider chipping in.

And while now is certainly not the time to say more than that, the climate will eventually change, opening the door for open-minded discussion at city hall, where aldermen will play an important role in how things proceed.

Given how important the Flames are to the local economy, the club definitely deserves the city's financial support -- the question is just how much.

"We've had cordial and preliminary discussions with the city around lots of things and potential locations and, at the right time, there will be more dialogue with the city and with the public," said King.

"We're not going to sneak up on anybody."

Even though there aren't a lot of "rain games", the general feeling in Winnipeg was that the stadium needed a roof to protect from the elements. Previous stadium also had a roof so if they had built IGF without one, it would have felt like a downgrade despite all the upgrades in other areas. Heard somewhere another reason for the roof was partly to appease residents in the area - roof would reduce the noise outside the stadium. Not sure about that one though.

The city is not really paying that much for the stadium. In fact, most of the money from the city will come from the redevelopment of the old stadium grounds into retail (right now a Super Target is being built there). Can't remember the exact number, too lazy to look it up but it covers quite a bit of the city's share.

The provincial government is covering the majority of the cost of stadium construction. $171 million of the $204 million. $85 million of that will be repaid by the Bombers over 40 years, at least hopefully they will repay it.

New Edmonton Oilers arena to be named Rogers Place

[By John MacKinnon, Edmonton Journal December 3, 2013 1:48 PM]

EDMONTON - Rogers Communications Inc., has purchased the naming rights to the future home of the Edmonton Oilers in downtown Edmonton, the Journal confirmed Tuesday.

The name of the building will be Rogers Place.

The communications giant last week paid $5.2 billion on a 12-year deal to purchase exclusive Canadian TV rights to NHL games, including ownership of the iconic Hockey Night in Canada franchise that had been CBC's central cultural property for decades.

It's not known how much Rogers paid Rexall Sports Inc. and Oilers owner Daryl Katz for the arena naming rights, nor how long the deal is for. As a result of nearly four years of often painful, fractious negotiations with the City, the Oilers retain all revenue from the naming rights on the yet-to-built downtown facility.

The Oilers will reap about $14 million annually from the national Rogers TV deal in an era when the NHL's US$64.3-million salary cap is expected to climbing above $70 million The much-anticipated naming rights deal further cements the partnership between the Oilers and Rogers. In October, the club signed a deal making Rogers its official telecommunications partner.

In that multi-year sponsorship deal, announced Oct. 1, Rogers Communications became the official telecommunications sponsor of the Oilers, acquiring marketing rights for the Oilers, the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings and Rexall Place, where both teams currently play.

The most visible sign of that agreement to Oilers fans are seven Rogers cell phone charging stations sprinkled around Rexall Place.

Rogers already has a long-term regional TV deal to broadcast 60 Oilers regular-season NHL games.

The Oilers and the City of Edmonton are expected to announce the naming rights deal at a 1 p.m. news conference near the site of the new arena.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So how does this affect Rogers' deal with Vancouver's arena? Will Vancouver renew when the naming rights come up for renegotiation?

A long departure from Skyreach Center when Edmonton couldn't attract interest in any of the large national players.

^ An excellent point for those that don't think this is very big news. Not to mention it is one more piece of the overall financial puzzle that is now secured.
