Some of the lots in Rural Estates look big enough to subdivide lol. But this is why I said that, some of the empty land between that subdivision and the highway should be be watched so that rural estates can't expand more.

Copycat or not, we went to Big League Burgers this weekend. It looks like Five Guys, but not so much in the dining area IMHO. In any event, the food was very good and the staff was friendly enough. We will return, I really enjoy my bacon cheeseburger, very tasty and the fries were great! My wife said that it's not as good as Five Guys, but one of the best burgers in town for sure. In some ways, I like this joint better than Relish downtown which is overpriced...
I guess many folks share my opinion of Big League because it was packed in the middle of the afternoon. Copycat or not, long live Big League! Yum!

I just drove out this way for the first time in months…….

Holy Crap - that's a big clear cut!!!

You could fit three trucking depots in there. There certainly is enough room for Maritime-Ontario and Day & Ross, that's for sure!!

The second lot that was cleared further in (you can see it on the Google Maps satellite photo too) also seems destined for something important too. They widened Berry Mills Road in front of this lot and appear to be putting in a dedicated turning lane.

Big things seem to be afoot for Berry Mills Road. I think they should just give in and four-lane the whole road out as far as the TCH.

Ah, I imagine you are absolutely right Myles, that would explain the turning lane that they put in on Berry Mills Road. The city would have paid for that……..

Regarding that huuuge clearcut in front of the Westmorland Albert Solid Waste site, it is insanely too large for a Maritime Ontario truck depot, or even both a Maritime Ontario truck depot and a Day & Ross depot.

How about if you added a WalMart distribution centre into the mix as well??

I profess no special insider information here, and this is all pure speculation but there is obviously more than just a trucking depot being built here.

WalMart stated during the recent press speculation (in NS) that they normally make any announcements regarding new projects in January or February of the year. As such, we might know the final answer in the next couple of months. I think Berry Mills is a very viable alternative to the long rumoured location in Scoudouc, and WalMart seemed to pour cold water on recent speculation they might build in Amherst.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that it's too big. It's just about exactly 50 acres, based on Google Earth.

Kent's new warehouse is sitting on 75 acres. Irving Personal Care is ~35 acres and so is Midland's. Bernice MacNaughton HS is on ~25.

Some of the crazier rumours about WalMart were talking about a million square foot building. That would be pretty close to 25 acres just on its own, without any parking or landscaping.

Yes, I know. Pics and satellite photos don't do justice. You must see it with your own eyes to really get the wow factor.

Study to examine recreation needs in NW Moncton
Allan Dearing
News 91.9
Dec 18, 2013 05:50:21 PM

MONCTON, N.B. – Moncton City Council has commissioned a $130,000 dollar study to examine recreation needs for the northwestern portion of the city.

C.E.I. Architecture is also being asked to examine recreational possibilities for the Moncton Coliseum if a downtown centre is built.

Councillor Pierre Boudreau believes that move would allow the Coliseum to get out of the red.

“At the present time, the entire complex operates at a loss of roughly $1 million dollars a year,” notes Boudreau.

A neighbourhood group in Northwest Moncton is lobbying for a community centre so that residents can easily walk or bike to get there.

personal note - this is the next phase for the proposed recreational and community centre to be built behind Evergreen Park School. I think the city is pretty much committed to the project. The study is intended to finalize the components that will be included with the recreational centre.

Moncton Renames Street For New Cabela's Store

A major American retailer has convinced Moncton City Council to make an exception to an incoming rule and re-name the street where it will be located 'Cabela Court', after the company.

In a news release, the hunting, fishing and outdoor equipment giant, Cabela's Incorporated, said its first Atlantic Canada store will open off Mapleton Road in 2015 in a 50,000 square foot building.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-renames-street-for-new-cabela-s-store-1.2504908

Personal note- The old name for the street (Portico Court) was pretty non descript and generic, and there is nothing built on the street (yet), but I don't know if I appreciate this sort of corporate pandering. The city did this once before with "Marriott Drive", where the new Fairfield Inn by Marriott was built. I don't think this is necessary…..

If it was my choice, I wouldn't do this. Eventually, you could have a Hilton on Marriott Drive and Better Buy Sports on Cabela Court. YIKES!
But in the grand scheme of things, I just want the damn store built and open. And today. Fishing season is coming and papa needs a new pair of everything.

It's a great addition to see Cabela's coming, but at only 50 000 ft2, it's rather underwhelming in size.

So, I see in the paper today that Northrup Frye School on Ryan Street is maxing out on enrollment and an addition to the school will be necessary by 2017/18. This is despite the fact that Ecole le Sommet just opened last fall (they expected some bleeding from the anglophone district due to blended families sending their children to the new French school). In addition, enrollment at Evergreen Park School is holding steady and is not expected to decline.

Just another indication that the growth in the northwest end is continuing unabated......

And also an indication that the government still hasn't realized that the schools they are building are generally too small. Aren't there companies out there whose job it is to predict growth like this? It's always been this way, but no one seems to have learned from it. Of course there is always the argument about one government spending the bare minimum to get the votes, but leaving any possible growing pains for a future government.

This is actually a pretty classic problem in urban sprawl. Area is growing and local school is near capacity. Government builds a new school to relieve capacity, but it quickly fills up because of a surge in demand from young families moving to the area. Problem is, these neighbourhoods tend to have very similar demographics - they're all young families. After 12-20 years though, all their kids have made their way through school and that neighbourhood filled with young families is now filled with empty nesters. Now there are far fewer children going to these schools.

You see this in older parts of the city. Edith Cavelle, Bessborough, Hillcrest etc. are all a lot less packed than in the new neighbourhoods. In 15 years time, Evergreen and Northrup Frye will be the same way.

Rather than building more schools, we really should be getting smarter about bussing and using the assets we have more effectively.

Apparently the rebranding of the Future Inn on Mapleton Rd to a Four Points by Sheraton will come at some cost to the owners.

Apparently the bathrooms in all 130 guest rooms will have to be redone in order to conform to Four Points standards. I imagine other renovations may be necessary as well……….

I've been to the Future Inn, it has good bones to start with, but renovations are needed in the bathrooms, they're a little bit too motel for Starwood standards. Not surprised by this one bit, I knew it was coming. The visibility of being a Starwood property will be very good for this property and for the region. There will now be 1 Hilton, 1 Starwood and 2 Marriott branded properties in Moncton, the first in New Brunswick to have all 3 brands. However, the only full service property of any of these brands is in Saint John; the Hilton Saint John. Maybe someday we will see a full-ledged Westin, Sheraton, Hilton or Marriott in Moncton.

I was looking on the Four Points by Sheraton website and the slate the hotel will be ready for January of 2015 so that is awesome news that they are coming to Moncton. And I have stayed at the one at the Bangor International Airport and that is a nice spot and can't wait to try it.

Construction of Kingswood Academy, on the west end of Ryan Street, not far from Northrup Frye School is apparently imminent.

It will be a combination Montessori School and daycare facility with 15 classrooms and 180 students, employing 26 teachers covering from pre-school to grade six.

Supposedly the school will be open by September 1st for the new academic year. This seems like a rather aggressive construction schedule…...
